PAP won elections simply by improving the lives of the majority. Period.

PAP continued to win elections by pleasing more voters than it pissed off with its various policies. Period.

There are no dirty tricks. GRCs won't keep them in power if enough voters are unhappy with PAP and vote them out. But the hard truth is that Ah Gong was a very astute man. He learnt and applied many basic truths in life to politics after surviving the Jap Occupation and the British colonial rule. As long as Ah Gong took care of the bread-and-butter issues, he would have secured the votes of the majority. Vast majority of voters are a lot more concerned about putting food on the table and improvement to their lives over democracy and freedom of speech.

While Chee and JBJ yap non-stop about these ideals and some people do appreciate, most also realized that Chee and JBJ and other opposition figures have no idea and little interest in bread-and-butter issues. So, these duds only secure the minority of the votes on a regular basis.

Every good government gives out goodies. Only a corrupt government will keep the goodies for itself. There are many resource rich countries that have very poor infrastructure because their government plundered the state resources for personal enrichment.

Ballot slips are serialized to prevent electoral fraud such as stuffing the ballot boxes. If you think your civil service boss or government public service is mistreating you because you voted for opposition, this is your golden opportunity to file a police report and get rid of them, because according to the law, your vote is secret. Even Low Thia Khiang conceded that your vote is secret.

Political playing fields have always been unequal since the beginning of time. Even Ah Gong was once the opposition. The opposition here face an uphill task because PAP focuses on bread-and-butter issues. Many sinkies do travel around the ASEAN region and beyond, and we have seen for ourselves the poverty that exists in many parts of the world because their government is way more concern about being corrupt than about improving the lives of the people.

That's why majority of voters vote for PAP.
