I'm a doctor myself and generally speaking, Singapore does not do any good to the profession as the fees and all are too much. Compare a Doctor who disrupted his NS and study locally, he as to do Houseman, being bullied and then get bullied again in the army for 2 years... and forgo ICT till he is 65..is no easy task. Plus the hours during housemenship makes it actually illegal, because it's basically WATCH-OVER-WATCH PUNISHMENT made during the colonial times of the british navy. Even the SAF don't allow 36hour duties, guard, clerk,CDO,SDO etc (some do..but something happen...U cover your own).
Which comes to the second problem of monetary rewards. Even in Malaysia, they are paying heck of a good pay for GP calls in the government. I'm a Singaporean and at times..I do calls, Locum when I feel like doing it. Many of us, do Insurance Medical Boards as it does better rewards.
I am trained abroad, and most of those who train abroad knew of the problems, because it's a blessing in disguise that SAF don't allow you to disrupt yr NS for overseas training. Mainly, we all became Clerks or Medics in the Medical Corps. Finish the tour, we go overseas and study, and never look back to Singapore...other than to enjoy the ICT as a WOSE, having fun..without being disturbed that much. Most of us are not even required to do the dreaded MOCC, for MINDEF can't even pay our regular pay. How much? talk about $15,000 a month!!! More than a Lt.Col ...so U expect MINDEF to send them to MOCC than, AOAS CTC BTC and SCSC ...totalling 2 yrs stint courses? Talk Cock Sing Song Session for reservists.......I doubt it..even during good economic times
So, if you want to work in Singapore, it's your call, they want to do so... everyone has choices. Those who were in Singapore want to get into private practice once their bond is over. Hopeful of getting $10k a month. I'm not rich to be able to study in UK as a son of a cabbie. We work harder there, no ma-pa give money situation. Some like me... sell stuff on eBay and drive a Minicab to pay for fees. Thus we appreciate life better.
And that the studies in UK is so simple...not as stressful. Happy hour all around.
And for yr info...I love to be on Night Calls at the A&E in UK...very interesting and challenging..... more than ours here because we do MEDIVAC calls..meaning we go into the helicopter and do rescue missions. Something you don't see in SG. And the pay? talk about $400/hr! Whatever we do..we do it professionally. Any deaths... we lose our license. Here...chin chai lah! The "Malaysia Boleh" attitude from abroad is slowly creeping up the morale and giving the SAF attitude to the patients...Serve and F-**F...I'm done with my bond.
BTW, A&E in Uk are worse...like Kent&Canterbury, Royal London where one see a sick parade of 300+ patients in a 8-hr shift! Just to let U know.
And I won't get called on my off days....
