CHINA - Nanyang Siang Pau reported that sex photos and videos of a couple - believed to be that of Chinese official Lei Zhengfu and his mistress - have been leaked on the Internet.

The pornographic recordings have spread like wildfire online, with netizens crowning Lei with the nickname of "Lei Guan Xi", naming him after Edison Chen "Guan Xi". Edison is known for his sex scandals including one that involved several A-list female celebrities.

Lei, secretary of the Beibei District Committee of the Communist Party in Chongqing, has been accused of keeping his mistress for "quite some time".

An online post also attached an official photo of Lei next to a photograph of the sex act in a move to get surfers to make their own comparison of the actors in the videos.

SHANGHAI - China sacked on Friday a district Communist Party official after images of him having sex with his mistress were splashed across microblog websites.

The case highlights the influence of China's fast-growing microblogging community, and the ruling Communist Party's growing sensitivity and responsiveness to public anger against abuse of power, official impunity and corruption.

Screenshots from the sex video first appeared on Sina Corp's Weibo site on Tuesday.

Lei Zhengfu, a district party chief in the southwestern city of Chongqing, was fired after an investigation by the party's discipline watchdog confirmed that it was he who appeared in the video, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

The agency reported on Thursday that Lei had told a reporter the video, shot in 2007, was a fake.

The party has stepped up its rhetoric against corruption, seeking to counter anger from citizens over regular reports of graft and debauchery among officials, but efforts to root out the problem have hardly made a dent.

Disgraced politician Bo Xilai, whose expulsion from the party overshadowed the run-up to last week's once-in-a-decade leadership transition, has been accused of engaging in "improper sexual relations with multiple women", among other crimes.

Bo, who also faces possible charges of corruption and abuse of power, has yet to stand trial.

Net-savvy Chinese people have found a potent weapon for fighting official corruption and abuse of power in microblogs like Weibo, which had more than 420 million users at the end of the third quarter this year.

In September, another official, Yang Dacai, lost his job in the northwestern province of Shaanxi after Internet users compiled photos of him wearing several luxury watches that he was unlikely to be able to afford on a civil servant's salary.

A month later, an urban management official in the southern province of Guangdong, Cai Bin, was sacked after online postings about him owning 22 homes.

Lei's sacking was among the most talked about topics on the hugely popular Weibo site on Friday

Police in southwest China's Chongqing municipality have broken up a criminal ring suspected of using secretly filmed sex videos to extort officials, local authorities said Thursday.

In the latest development in a sex video scandal that has made a splash online and led to the sacking of a district official last year, government sources said ten other officials have been removed from their posts for allegedly appearing in such videos.

The ten officials include county- and district-level officials serving in local government departments or Communist Party of China (CPC) branches, as well as executives of state-owned enterprises.

A sex video featuring one official who was later confirmed to be CPC Secretary of Chongqing's Beibei district Lei Zhengfu was widely circulated online in November.

Lei was sacked days later following an investigation.

The Chongqing Municipal Committee for Discipline Inspection found that the ring had hired women to seduce local officials, covertly filmed their sexual acts and used the videos as tools of extortion.

Investigations by the local police found that from 2008 to 2009, Xiao Ye, a suspect and a key member of the network, blackmailed the officials, after surreptitiously shooting video of them having sex with women arranged by Xiao.

A sex video featuring one official, who was later confirmed to be Lei Zhengfu, Party chief of the CPC Beibei District Committee, was widely circulated online in late November.

Lei was sacked days later following an investigation.
