I have seen the notices in the toilet, both in Thailand and Taiwan, exhorting users not to discard used tissues into the toilet bowl [presumably for fear that they might choke] but the dustbin beside.

Can you imagine 'used' tissues being thrown in the dustbin which is located next to the toilet bowl ? The booth will be stink like hell.

Does anyone heed the advice of the notices posted ?

if im @ public toilet..no choice will throw it into the bowl..haha...cause usually publlic toilet do not have bin insde the cubicle...

You mentioned your office. So what's your habit as far as office toilet is concerned ?

Do you mean the toilet roll, the tissue that people use to clean the ass? What is wrong with discarding the used tissue in the toilet bowl?

If it is a ladies sanitary pad, then yes, that should be discarded in the bin.

Yes. You should be asking the management of the buildings and the people who put up the notices.

Yes. They're referring to the toilet roll that you use to wipe your ass.

At first I thought they were referring only to sanitary pads and loose tissues and hand towels. Apparently I was wrong after checking out a few other buildings.

Wow, that is really weird. Sanitary pads and hand towels are understandable.

But toilet roll? These guys are crazy.

It is unhygenic to have a bin of tissue stained with shit next to the toilet bowl.

Anyway, I will continue to discard toilet roll into the toilet bowl for hygeine reasons, and besides how are they going to catch me? Not unless they removed the toilet door or install a camera.

Case in point - Robinson @ Rachadaphisek Road.

The point is not whether you will get caught if you choose not to follow the instructions.

The point is whether there is some kind of social consensus on such practice.

i know in China, they dump the stained toilet paper in a bucket / basket beside the toilet ...

and I find it damm disgusting...imagine u squat and pang sai...u inhale and see the stained paper - you will sooner puke.

never come across that!
may be they want you to mail the used tissue back to the manufacturer like kleenex or scotts for lucky draw ?

Throwing toilet paper in the bin is the practice for those living in old cities because their sewage system cannot handle the load. This is common in the Mediterranean like south Italy, Greece, Lebanon, Syria. Imagine their sewage system could be 300 years old. If it chokes, the whole city might blow up in shit!

This is something absolutely new to me. I've been to Taipei and Phuket (the 2 countries mentioned) and never see such notices.
