An Australian bank accidentally gave a teenager access to 4.6 million Australian dollars (£2.4 million) – and she allegedly spent most of it, apparently on handbags.

Christine Jiaxin Lee, now 21, was arrested at Sydney airport trying to flee to Malaysia after allegedly using funds made available to her due to a “glitch” by Westpac, one of Australia’s biggest banks.

She allegedly first received access to the funds when she was about to turn 18 in August 2012 and spent the money on handbags and luxury goods.

“That’s a lot of handbags,” said the magistrate.

The bank claims the funds were mistakenly made available via an unlimited overdraft account and that £1.7 million remains unrecovered.

The magistrate said the overdraft facility came with an expectation that the funds would be repaid, noting that the amount was “money we all dream about”.

But the magistrate noted that the funds were not the “proceeds of crime” and may have been spent legally, though Ms Lee would still have to repay the money.

"She didn't take it from them. They gave it to her," the magistrate said.

Ms Lee, a chemical engineering student, was born in Malaysia and has lived in Australia for five years.

Vincent King, her boyfriend, described her as a “good girl” but said he did not know about the alleged fraud.

“That’s big money,” he told reporters, when told of the amount.

Ms Lee tried to fly to Malaysia on Wednesday night using an emergency passport issued by Malaysia but her lawyer said she had simply lost her previous passport.

Police charged her with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

Ms Lee was granted bail but will have to report to police twice a day.

The matter will next be heard in June.

Well done. Only jiuhukias can screw the aussies up for charging horrendous tuition fees and absurd college charges.the amount asians spent on education in australia probably more than they can ever get from their coal mines and oil and gas. Its propping their economy.without these studrnts, australua will collapse.its time the students get something back.

If you extend the principle of finders keeper = there is nothing wrong with keeping and spending the money. She did nothing to entice the money to be paid into her account. I know quite a number of people have gone to jail for keeping the money. In most cases they just plead guilty without a fight.

People here who often said Msia young girls are more innocent and down to earth than Singapore young girls can go hit the wall. Lol.
