It was titled as Deputy Chief of General Staff, once held by BG Tan Chin Tiong and Colonel Mancharan Singh Gill. Somewhere along the line, it got abolished. So only CDF and no one else.

Col Gill was chief of artillery...did he get a BG rank?....his junior officer did...and went on to become PM!

If my memory serves me right, he remained a Colonel, when BG Lee, reported to him.
He retired as a Colonel.
