SINGAPORE: One in five Singaporean men has seen a doctor for hair loss problems.
According to a survey by pharmaceutical company MSD, Singapore men spend the most - at about S$300 a month - treating hair loss as compared to men in India, Malaysia, Philippines and Taiwan.
The survey also revealed seven in 10 men think thinning-hair makes them less attractive.
The survey was done in 2010 and it involved more than 1,000 men between 20 and 40 years old from Singapore as well the countries mentioned above.
A lady said: "You can be very good looking without hair and you can be very NOT good looking and not attractive with loads of hair."
While the survey also showed Singapore men are among the most sensitive when their hair loss is pointed out by others, two men interviewed said:
"A lot of people shave their heads even when they're not bald. It doesn't worry me. I wouldn't spend money to try and save my hair."
The other added: "It's more on the confidence that you portray to others rather than the hair loss. There're many guys with balding hair but who still look attractive in their own ways."
But there's certainly medication out there where a holistic approach is recommended.
Doctors advised getting to the root of the problem as soon as possible may increase your chances of reclaiming your crowning glory.
Dr Cheong Wai Kwong, a dermatologist at the Specialist Skin Clinic said: "It's not just taking medicine and applying medicine to your scalp.
It's also how you take care of your hair in terms of using the right shampoo, the right kind of hair products and also maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
After all stress can cause further hair loss."
