Did Islam begin when the angel Saraphel appeared to Qutham and began giving him the Qur’an?

Not only do some Islamic traditions say that Muhammad was originally named Qutham, but others assert that it was not the angel Gabriel, but the angel Saraphel, who first appeared to the messenger and began giving him the Qur’an.

Why these discrepancies? What do they reveal about the origins of Islam? How did they arise at all, if it had been universally taken for granted that it was Gabriel who appeared to Muhammad to give him the Qur’an?

Morals like how to conduct oneself and how to properly treat our fellow men as taught by ancient books are fine. When they teach killing and fornication, one needs to reject those.
