Billionaire Malaysian businessman Jho Low, who became infamous for living the high life with Hollywood celebrities and Arab oil barons, is making news again for his outrageous date night with Taiwanese pop star Elva Hsiao.
True to his flamboyant style and big partying ways, Jho threw Elva a RM5 million (S$2.0 million) surprise dinner date at the exclusive Atlantis The Palm hotel and resort in Dubai, all to declare his love and affection for her.
Someone with access to the date posted a five-minute-plus clip on YouTube of the extravaganza night, in which Jho woos Elva with a romantic dinner, roses, orchids, jewellery, live music and fireworks at the hotel's private beach.
He also had a big heart shaped into the sand by a hundred candles. Out on the sea itself, a giant neon light backdrop hung between two yachts with the message "Jho [hearts] Elva".
Halfway through dinner, two men parachuted down from the sky to present Elva with a Chopard pendant-and-necklace set estimated at RM83,500.
This was followed by a million-ringgit fireworks show and a violin performance.
Throughout the night, they were apparently doing a lot of hugging.
And as they were leaving, Elva reportedly had her arms wrapped around his, before they both got into a super luxurious Rolls Royce.
From the video, Elva is clearly emotional about the whole affair.
She's moved to tears at one point, and as she wipes the teardrops away from her face, Jho lovingly caresses her hair.
So what's this all about? Has Jho gotten over his Paris Hilton crush at last?
Well, according to Elva's manager, although the video has only just surfaced on YouTube, the date actually happened in 2011!
"Jho arranged the date to show his feelings for Elva after they attended a friend's wedding in Dubai last year," her manager said, adding that his 33-year-old client was very touched by the gesture but that she regarded her 30-year-old suitor more like a "younger brother".
Elva may see Jho as a younger brother-although that puts a whole Flowers In The Attic spin on the date-but she certainly likes younger men.
She's currently dating 21-year-old actor Ko Chen-tung-that's a 12-year difference between them-and the couple is now on holiday in Bali.
Elva came to the public's attention in 1998 after she made the top 12 cut at the New Talent Singing Awards audition in Vancouver.
A year later her debut pop album sold a million copies, and last year she became the first Taiwanese act to walk the red carpet at the Grammys.
Jho is the son of Penang businessman Datuk Larry Low and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School.
He came to public attention in 2009 after photos surfaced of him hanging out with Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton at some of New York's exclusive clubs.
