The mothers of two nine-year-old Nottingham boys who were sexually assaulted at a city park have described the devastating impact it has had on them.

In a statement read out at Nottingham Crown Court, one mum said her "once bubbly and outgoing child now makes excuses not to go out”.

The other mother told how being attacked at Melbourne Park in Aspley has left her young son “petrified that the man will come after him again and take him”.

Following a week-long trial, a jury took just over two hours to unanimously convict Afghan national Dawajan Ahmadzai of two counts of sexual assault of a child and one count of causing a child to watch a sexual act.

That involved him showing one of the boys a pornographic film clip on his mobile phone.

Jailing him for three years, Judge Julie Warburton said: “The boys had gone to Melbourne Park to play with friends, where they should have been safe.

“You clearly sought out and pursued contact with these young boys with a view to touching them for your own sexual gratification.

“I have no doubt on the evidence I saw and heard this was your intention throughout.

“It was done with a predatory sexual motive for your own deviant sexual pleasure.”

Giving evidence at the trial, one of the victims told how he was “grabbed and massaged” by the 27-year-old defendant, of no fixed address, as he played with friends in the park on the afternoon of June 15, this year.

The second young boy, who was also sexually assaulted by being hugged, was shown “a dirty video” of adults having sex by the defendant.

Prosecutor Stuart Lody read the mothers' statements.

In one, the mum said: “Before he was sexually assaulted, he was a bubbly and outgoing child who loved socialising with his friends, going out on his bike and having fun in Melbourne Park.

“Now he makes excuses not to go out and has put a barrier up.

“This man had no right to do what he did to my son, the impact this has had has been devastating.”

In her statement, the second mother said: “He has become withdrawn, asking why a grown man shows him dirty videos like this.

“He is petrified the man will come after him and take him despite all of us reassuring him he will not do it.”

The trial was shown footage of the two victims and an older friend playing in the park when the defendant arrived and the group started talking.

One boy said: “He came up behind me and started grabbing my belly so I pinched him to get him off me.

“He moved his hands up and started to massage my shoulders, digging his fingers in my collar bone, so I elbowed him and launched myself off the go-kart (I was sitting on) and headed towards the basketball court, and I called the police.”

The boy said shortly before he called the police, his friend was shown a pornographic video by the defendant, who had it on his mobile phone.

Asked about that, the witness said: “He showed him a proper dirty video saying ‘get your two friends to come and see this’.

“I said ‘no, I am not watching dirty stuff’.”

Mr Lody, opening the trial, said when the defendant was arrested, his phone was taken from him and examined, and it showed he was a member of a social media application on which members broadcast pornographic videos to each other.

He said: “He denied touching one of the boy’s shoulders, but the boy's shirt was taken and forensically examined and found to have the defendant’s DNA on it.

“How would that be possible if he had not touched him?”

Fergus Malone, mitigating, said his client has no previous convictions or cautions of any kind and is in the country legally.

He said: “This is not targeting a single child, it is approaching a group, so less serious than isolating anyone, and the showing of the porn film is very short-lived, perhaps four seconds.”

As well as the jail term, the judge placed Ahmadzai on the sex offender register for life, handed him a lifetime sexual harm prevention order and a 10-year restraining order.
