SINGAPORE: SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek on Thursday (Jan 25) brushed aside talk that he is expected to step down, calling those reports "purely speculative".

He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the launch of a programme that aims to better assist the elderly and those with special mobility needs.

Rumours of Mr Kuek's possible resignation was fuelled by a Straits Times report last week that said observers are expecting him to step down, following the resignation of the transport operator's vice-president of corporate communications, Patrick Nathan.

There has been a series of changes to SMRT's management, and last December, SMRT chairman Seah Moon Ming stepped down as CEO of Pavillion Energy to focus on his role with the transport operator.

Mr Kuek, meanwhile, has kept a low profile in recent months. Most notably, he did not helm a joint press conference on the causes of the Joo Koon train collision in November that injured almost 40 people and caused disruption to services that affected thousands of commuters.

SMRT has been under pressure from the public and the Government after a series of high-profile incidents. Apart from the Joo Koon train collision, there was the flooding of a section of an MRT tunnel in October which caused prolonged delays.

You forgot the SMRT bus riot cases, the engineers death cases, the security breach cases. If he worked in private sector or under donald Trump, he would be fired instantly and made known to the press for allowing any one of those incidents to happen under his watch.

The Donald would have pointed to him and said "You are fired"

He's waiting for that, getting fired would entail fat compensation. Why should he 'do the noble thing' and resign and get nothing?

There is nothing more noble than not giving up. That is why we all adore ah gong LKY.

If one has does something admirable, in the face of adversity & hardship, working hard to make things work & getting paid for the job that should be paid better; then not giving up is noble.

This f%$%%ker is paid a salary so high, if working in a real world organization; the responsibility & DUTY will be great, will get the sack immediately for all the failure of managing....but he is mentioned as a 'volunteer', 'dropped in' by the party in power. If he has any honour in his veins ( some more a career soldier), should have committed harakiri as prescribed by his 'boss' Cow$8 or resigned or "un-volunteer"...to remain & declare his intention... really have no shame.

If this was a opposition 'volunteer'....you can BET, his NAME WILL BE DRAGGED THROUGH THE m&d & asked to commit harakiri, by the same person, known as Cow$8.

SHAMELESS!

It was proven that the issues MRT faced is not his fault but the individuals whom some might be breadwinner. Please stop scolding him, he's like our master who is also faultless. Long live PAP

this shameless, incompetent deadwood (just like those wooden track sleepers) of a volunteer should be replaced and told to "fuck-off already"! :(

Talking about deadwood & wooden track sleepers, there are so many wooden sleeping people in parliament, only comes alive when opposition members speaks, the rest of the time, offer nothing constructive other than singing the party's theme song. There is another 'wooden sleeper'...the one & only Wooden Go...which is costing the taxpayers money, the 70% won't mind paying, the others, won't want to pay, but is forced to pay too.

These 'woods' should have been uprooted & thrown into the furnace..

All these come about with the boasting of a world class transportation system and belittling the others...especially expectations of commuters.

They are just puppets. What their master say, stay/go, they obey.

For the master, they just want someone obedient. Don't be your own man, don't give ideas. I say u do.
