A panel of engineering and transport experts met for the first time on Monday to make recommendations on how rail operator SMRT could improve the performance of its rail network.

SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek hosted these experts at the inaugural SMRT Technical Advisory Panel meeting held on Jan 6 and 7 and chaired by Professor Alfred Huan, Executive Director of A*STAR's Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC).

The panel of international and local technical experts that make up the Technical Advisory Panel comprises seven members from A*STAR, NUS, NTU, SUTD, Imperial College, KCPM Consulting and Sentosa Development Corp.

In a media statement, SMRT said the Advisory Panel gave advice on SMRT initiatives covering rail engineering development, business process re-engineering and technological innovation.

The transport company said it will be investing in its rail engineering capability and plans to bolster its engineering strength, beginning with the hiring of more engineers in the coming years.

It will also be moving towards a Publicly Available Specification (PAS55) certification, a rigorous standard for the management of infrastructural assets.

Professor Alfred Huan said: "It is reassuring to see that SMRT is looking to enhance its technical competencies, as well as invest in technology innovations. We are confident that these proactive initiatives, which leverage on cutting edge technology and advanced processes, will benefit SMRT's safety and service operations and thus benefit the commuting public."

SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek said: "Our engagement with leading technical experts demonstrates SMRT's commitment towards strengthening our operational performance. The Technical Advisory Panel has brought new insight and ideas to improve SMRT's capability development and processes, as well as in technology innovations exploitation. We look forward to studying the recommendations in greater detail."

I wonder who is the expert he is referring to. There is NO one in the panel that is recognized as an expert on mass transit. If you have competent people in the executive ranks, you don't need an advisory panel. So, we have a bloated management with nothing or little competence. Then add on a panel of illusionary experts. Now, you know why fares keep going up even though service is going down on SMRT.

Clearly, Desmond Kwek is not up to the task.

LOL at Sentosa Development Corp. This guy is clueless. Then again, it's hardly surprising because he's an ex-SAF military trash who's been parachuted into one of the Familee's businesses.

That's right. They must have included him because of his expertise in running the monorail in Sentosa. What a joke! The monorail at Sentosa is a toy train as compared to a mass rapid transit system.

They don't need any panel. It's plain common sense. SMRT under Saw Phaik Hwa had neglected preventive maintenance and regular technical upgrades despite the rail being fast aging, And why? Bcos her boss Ho Ching instructed her to focus entirely on the rental occupancy and income of the retail outlets built round the stations. Just ask anyone in a coffee shop and he or she can tell u that. All this panel thingy is plain wayang- typical hallmark of the PAP govt.

I can hardly believe what I am reading. This committee approach is typical of someone who is lost. What does A*star, SUTD, NUS , NTU know about railway operations? KCMP has experience in railway consulting but it looks like a one man operation from Australia. Imperial College for what ? Another big name ? But seriously , Sentosa Development Corporation ? How much are we paying this joker so he can waste money like this. I wonder what's happening with Singapore. Technically this is useless but it looks like a big PR effort. In other words high budget wayang. We Singaporeans are really too kind.

maybe he might make an annoucement after reading Atlas Shrugged by Ary rand, that Smrt has decided to invest in a technology called rearden metal, world most strongest and powerful alloy, capable of carrying trainloads of south asians at high speeds.
