The problem was the board of directors, many of whom are still there today.
They got the kind of person they wanted, to maximise the spaces around and in the stations to raise revenue and profits.
The same set of ball-less directors left her out there to hang and dry when there were problems.

Desmond Kuek said yesterday that the number of "train withdrawals" (breakdown say breakdown lah!) on SMRT's network dropped last year.

In 2012, it was 3.3 incidents for every 100,000km travelled, but this fell so 2.2 last year. (Well done, Desperate Des!)

He said the ongoing target is to bring it down to 2.

The board is at fault for just rubber stamp whatever smart alec ideas she proposed like maximise retail space, however she is still the CEO responsible for the day to day running of the company and the one who cut corners in maintenance and practised bumi policy in SMRT by hiring all DFS people although they are inexperienced. Infact I think she is let off too easily - even managed to hang on till her last bonus cut off date - she should be jailed for bring down a national transport company and affecting millions...
