dentist. More than half of all children in Singapore have one or more rotten
teeth by the time they start primary school. -- ST PHOTO: ONG WEE JIN

We refer to the article “One in two Singapore kids has rotten teeth:
Report
” (Straits Times, May 15).

More than half and more children with rotten teeth?

It states that “More than half of all children in Singapore have one or
more rotten teeth by the time they start primary school.

A report on the oral health of schoolchildren found that the proportion
of children with dental caries at the age of seven had gone up from 47.6 per
cent in 2003, to 50.6 per cent last year.”

Public fees much higher than private clinics?

According to the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) web site’s Average Fee for Dental
Procedures - 7 out of the 8 dental procedures listed show that the fees at
public institutions are substantially higher than private dental clinics.

newthread.php
For example, for
Crowns (capping) – single unit

  • Public Institutions : $605 –
    $765

    Private Dental Clinics : $400 –
    $1,605

For Full Dentures – Per Arch

  • Public Institutions : $521 –
    $732

    Private Dental Clinics : $250 –
    $1,500

How is it possible that the cost of dental treatment at a public dental
institution is more than 50% of that charged by private dental clinics?

Are there any countries that have these strange phenomena?

Public subsidised dental services is a joke in
Singapore?

Ask any dental professional in Singapore, and you may discover that public
subsidised” dental treatment is
a “challenge” for the
lower-income, because the public dental polyclinics generally do not accept
walk-ins, except in ”emergency
cases.

Appointments for “subsidised
dental treatment can be months if not years.

Walk-ins to the National Dental Centre are as I was told – charged
non-subsidised rates.

Let the numbers do the talking?

With only 944,000 Attendances at Public Sector Dental
Clinics
in 2013 – against a population of about 5.4 million – you
may get some indication of how “unaffordable” dental treatment is,
particularly for the lower-income.

Look at TTSH area, there are so many specialist center building there. These
are build for the rich. The posh building of these medical center will deter you
from going there to seek medication if you are the low income group. Our Govt
made Singapore the playground of the rich. If you go polyclinic, they will only
give you cheap medicine. If you are prescribe with expensive medicine, they will
tell you to buy from private pharmacy.

The other day the 40-yr old capping of my molar tooth came out after
intensive drilling done last year for root canal treatment which cost $1,500
done at a private dental clinic.

So I went to another private dental clinic to put back a new crown and was
told it will cost around $1,500. I showed the dentist my blue CHAS card (meant
for the poorest of the poor) and he told me I am eligible for a discount of only
$190. I left because I felt that spending nearly $3,000 on one tooth is just too
much.

So I went to the National Dental Centre after getting a referal from the
Polyclinic and was informed that the crown will cost $700-$800 but have to wait
6 mths or more.

What is the point of the blue CHAS card if it costs more? although the
treatment is done a private clinic and the waiting period is only a few
days.

Waiting time for government hospitals is just unrealistic. 6 months to 1 year
is a norm. For those who really need to see a specialist, they may not make it
to see the doctor. You are telling me the government care for its
people?

Can anyone here recommend good dental clinics in JB that they have patronised?

I got a shocking bill from sg dental clinic last time and stopped visiting for years. My last visit to a dentist was to one in Bangkok where it's half price for the same treatment. However, I'm not able to go Bangkok now as overseas holiday means going back to sg to visit my parents (and a short visit to JB if necessary).
