Denise Phua should be publicly reprimanded

The ongoing reality TV like feud between Dr. Lee and PM Lee has somehow diluted public interest in the disgraceful comments made by MP Denise Phua last week. Her comments which bear no interpretation other than ignorant, bigoted and racist appear to have been glossed over by the PAP majority government. Perhaps, they too have been sidelined by the bigger family dynastic power tussles brewing.

While MP Phua has somewhat apologised for her ill advised opinions, it is important to note that her apology is very much reserved. She issued a Facebook statement asking for the public to “accept my sincere apology if I have caused you concern” as opposed to an unreserved apology for her misguided snobbery. (http://theindependent.sg/denise-phu...-with-the-foreign-cleaners-in-my-constituency). While she acknowledged that she should not have used the “walking time bomb” phrase, she has not apologised for her inherent mindset that led to such an analogy in the first place!

Nor has she pledged to take steps to eradicate her inherent prejudices!

The PAP government has repeatedly confirmed its commitment to the fostering of multi racial relationships. Indeed, weren’t the editors of The Real Singapore prosecuted for alleging promoting xenophobic feelings? (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/former-the-real-singapore/2578924.html) It does seem odd that the PAP has not then taken its own MP to task?

While The Real Singapore was irresponsible, it is arguably clear that a widely reported MP’s words in Parliament hold more power to influence than a couple of editors from an online platform? Why then, the deafening silences?

As I noted in (http://theindependent.sg/denise-phu...ating-foreign-workers-will-create-time-bombs/), Singapore’s relationships with neighbouring countries are crucial – not just for our economic growth but also for our security. Why else would the government spend so much on defense? Clearly they have security concerns. Why then is an MP who as a member of government whose words can be taken as representative of the government not taken seriously by the PAP government? Are they not concerned that MP Phua’s words can cause a diplomatic incident?

Singapore is a multi racial society. The government has taken great care to reiterate their concerns for racial harmony to be maintained (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/singapore-must-do-more-to/2438094.html).

Indeed, this is even more important in the face of blatant discrimination that has been coming to light (http://theindependent.sg/malay-man-responds-maturely-to-woman-who-claimed-muslims-cannot-compromise/) (http://theindependent.sg/police-report-lodged-over-tampines-1s-racist-reply-to-entrepreneur/). These types of discrimination have to be nipped in the bud.

An MP who seems to be fanning the flames of bigoted ignorance should therefore be taken to task publicly by the party she serves. If action is not taken, then the government’s continued public utterances of commitment to racial harmony would appear to sound hollow.

The PAP has in the past publicly punished its MPs for indiscretions. Michael Palmer and David Ong have been made to resign over their private lives. What more an MP making damaging statements in her capacity as an MP?

While I am not necessarily suggesting that Ms Phua resign, I do think she needs to be publicly reprimanded.

there's nothing wrong with telling the truth like it is. they are all potential walking time bombs.

Nothing wrong with her description. It is an accurate depiction and i am tired of liberal dumbfucks trying to be politically correct.

Me too. She stated as honestly as she did. It's a truism in what she uttered. Why screw her? lol:D

ya, man! ...

shud subject her 2 pubic caning! ...

I think she should be praised and rewarded for telling it like it is.

Best reward or punishment shall be to provide her with junkets to Nude Delhi or Kolkutta

on bust rides and cunt pokes

I really don't know what the fuss is all about because ALL the Singaporeans I know consider places where ah neh foreigners congregate to be cesspits of humanity.

MPs were making derogatory comments about the area more than 2 decades ago and there is absolutely no reason why anything has changed. In fact the infestation of foreigners is far worse than it used to be.

I say hats off to her for warning the country about the dangers these foreign workers pose to the rest of us. Just because they sweep our streets and build our flats does not mean we have to put up with them in our public spaces.

& Roy Ngerng got his dickie snipped for asking it as it is???

Roy accused PM Lee of dipping his fingers into the country's reserves for personal gain. It was an outright lie. He knew it and so did the rest of Singapore. That is why he got almost no support whatsoever for his cause.

What Denise uttered is no less offensive than Amos-and the teenager was sent to jail and also remanded at the Institute of Mental Health.

Here we have an MP with an Arts Degree from NUS/MBA from Golden Gate University and worked in management at Hewlett-Packard/Wuthelam spewing such crap and not a word from "the power that be" (to quote Ms L).
Over to you K. Muralidharan Pillai , a potential MP (in the words of the PAP) "who stands for the politics of inclusion and reject the politics of division "

Amos brought religion into the mix and for that he deserves whatever comes his way.

On the other hand Ms Phua is warning the country of a potential powder keg situation where innocent people could well be hurt of killed and she is trying to be proactive to prevent another riot from occurring. The religion of the ah neh scum was not even mentioned.

Ms Phua is trying to save lives. Amos is trying to stir religious rivalry.

Jalan Besar GRC MP said communal areas in Little India, such as playgrounds and void decks, should be fenced off as large gatherings of foreign workers in the area have returned to levels before the Dec. 8, 2013 riot, and make them walking time-bombs and public incidents waiting to happen

Yes the playgrounds and void decks are for Singaporeans not foreign scum.

How would you like it if a bunch of smelly, drunk Ah Nehs invaded your living room every weekend?

IMO, the time bomb Denise mentioned is not the foreign workers.

She may be referring to the culprit of setting up the time bomb, i.e., PAP and its millions-of-dollars ministers and cabinet, just to achieve their KPI of GDP, thereby earning them even more months of bonus.

One cannot be faulted by stating facts. Then again, NKF cases before the last bomb went off proves stating facts in SG can get one sued and lost if no mountain backing whistle-blowers.

70% think that the PAP is doing a very good job.

They should ask Denise why she doesn't support integration. ;)
