US PC maker Dell is banking on Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system, launching the new business ultrabook Latitude 6430u in Taiwan on Thursday. Dell said it will also introduce two of its latest 10" Win8-based tablets to the Taiwan market within next three months.

Microsoft officially launched Windows 8 in October for laptops and desktops as well as mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It features a tilted interface and built-in apps and aims to enhance users' touchscreen experience. PC makers have not fully embraced the operating system, especially after Microsoft changed its OEM model — running its OS on other PC makers' products — and launched the Surface tablet under its own brand.

PC makers have been facing many new challenges but Terence Liao, president of Dell Taiwan, believes that Windows will remain the major operating system in the PC market for the next five to ten years. Although PC users may take some time to adapt to the new system since not everyone has the need for touch functions, Win8 definitely represents a great option for tablet makers, Liao said

Dell added the Latitude 6340u with its 13" screen to the three business ultrabooks it has introduced to Taiwan market. The PC maker's 10" XPS tablet running on Windows RT and Latitude 10 running on Windows 8 that have been launched in the United States will reach Taiwan in the next quarter.

The PC maker's R&D center in Taiwan has made significant contributions to Dell's desktop computers, laptops and servers, said Liao. Taiwanese engineers have helped design the DCS servers that Dell made for its cloud computing services. The PC maker has sold over 1 million of the servers worldwide since it was launched four years ago. Dell's sales of IT services and servers in Taiwan this year have also been outstanding.
