SINGAPORE - A delivery man who robbed a junior college student of her mobile phone as she walked to school was on Friday sentenced to two years in jail and six strokes of the cane.
Shaffik Nassar Issa Abdat, 33, pleaded guilty to following and robbing 17-year-old Nur Haireen Mohd Kahalid on July 12, after she passed him on an overhead bridge leading to Meridian Junior College in Pasir Ris.
The court heard that at about 8am that day, he snatched Ms Nur Haireen's phone, which was worth $549, as she was walking down the steps of the bridge. He also kicked her before running away in the opposite direction.
Shaffik sold the phone, which has not been recovered, at a second-hand phone shop for $200. No restitution has been made. Ms Nur Haireen was given three days' medical leave for bruises she suffered during the attack.
