Debtor-turned-loan shark harasser, 23, arrested

SINGAPORE - A 23-year-old debtor-turned-loan shark harasser was arrested by the police in the vicinity of Allenby Road on Wednesday for loan shark harassment.
Officers from the Jurong Police Division made the arrest at about 9.58am and seized bicycle locks, a handphone, four bottles of paint, marker pens, haversack bag and cap from the suspect.
The suspect is believed to have participated in loan shark harassment at Woodlands, Ang Mo Kio, Yishun, Defu Lane and Whampoa public housing estates by splashing paint at their units, padlocking the main-gates with bicycle locks and scrawling loan shark related graffiti on the wall.
The suspect will be charged in Court on Dec 12. Under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loan shark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of up to five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.
