Syrian state media on Friday evening said that Israel launched a strike against targets near Damascus and claimed the country’s air defenses downed a number of missiles.
“Aerial defenses detected hostile targets coming from the direction of Quneitra and dealt with them,” the official SANA news agency quoted a military source saying, referring to a Syrian town in the Golan Heights bordering Israel.
Reports in Syria said there were loud explosions south of Damascus, the capital.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group reported several explosions in the Al-Kiswah area outside the city, in the vicinity of Iranian and Hezbollah storage facilities and air defense batteries.
There was no response from the Israel Defense Forces, which rarely comments on reported strikes.
The Israeli military has acknowledged carrying out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria in recent years on targets linked to Iran, which is backing President Bashar Assad’s regime in the Syrian civil war. Israel accuses Iran of seeking to set up a military presence in Syria that could be used to threaten the Jewish state.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, reported three explosions southwest of Damascus. It added that it was not immediately clear if the explosions were caused by Israeli airstrikes or surface-to-surface missiles.
The Observatory’s chief, Rami Abdurrahman, told The Associated Press that the strikes targeted the area of el-Kiswah, which is home to positions and storage sites for Iranian and Lebanon’s Hezbollah forces allied with Syria’s government.
In November 2017, Western intelligence officials told the BBC that Iran had established a permanent military base in el-Kiswah. Israel has reportedly hit the base several times.

Loud blasts echoed across Damascus late on Friday, residents said, shortly before the television news bulletin that reported the incident.
SANA, Syria's state news agency, quoted a Syrian military source who said that the air defence system was activated against missiles fired at western Damascus from the direction of Quneitra, in the occupied Golan Heights.
The state television channel also showed footage of the night sky with a point of light firing up into it and the sound of shooting, and reported that air defences had brought down some objects. It did not immediately report casualties or material damage.
Late last month, three Syrian government fighters were wounded in Israeli raids on military positions in the city of Musayaf in the province of Hama.
Syrian military sources said at the time that the Israeli aircraft had carried out raids from Lebanese airspace.
The Israeli military does not usually comment on reports concerning its air attacks in neighbouring Syria though it has recently acknowledged hitting what Tel Aviv claims are Iranian targets in Syria.
Since the civil war started, Israel has carried out scores of military air bombings in Syria against suspected arms transfers and deployments by Iranian forces and their Lebanese Hezbollah allies which are backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian Arab News Agency, Syria's state news agency, quoted a Syrian military source who said that the air defense system was activated against missiles fired at western Damascus from the direction of Quneitra, in the Golan Heights, within Israeli territory. A number of missiles were intercepted.
The state television channel showed footage of the night sky with a point of light firing up into it and the sound of shooting. It did not immediately report casualties or material damage.

Residents in Damascus said they heard several loud blasts shortly before the television news bulletin that reported the incident.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor affiliated with the Syrian opposition, reported that three explosions were heard in southern and southwestern Damascus. According to the report, the areas that were targeted have an Iranian military and Hezbollah presence.
Other reports associated with the opposition say that the strikes were carried out from Lebanese airspace.

The strikes follow a statement given to the Guardian Thursday night, in which a diplomatic source said that a convoy of Iranian missiles was transferred into Syria via Iraq's Anbar province last week. The source said that Israeli and U.S. intelligence were unaware of the transfer.
In April, Syrian state news reported that Israel targeted a military position near the province of Hama in Syria which was intercepted and some of its rockets downed by Syrian air defenses. This came just one month after seven members of Iran-backed armed forces were killed in alleged Israeli airstrikes on ammunition depots near Aleppo International Airport.
Iran's growing influence in Syria, where it has struck economic and trade deals, has raised the prospect of a military confrontation with its arch-enemy Israel.
Israel, which considers Iran its biggest threat, has according to media reports repeatedly attacked Iranian targets in Syria and those of allied militia, including Lebanon's Hezbollah. Israel rarely confirms or denies the reports, although it confirmed attacking Iranian targets in Syria in January and February.
Friday's incident comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran following attacks on four oil tankers in the Gulf and an intense sanction campaign.
