AFTER their divorce, a couple agreed that their young children would live with the father.
But instead of taking care of them, the 46-year-old man sexually abused his daughter, now 11, and committed acts of violence against her and his two sons, now nine and 12.
Yesterday, the man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his children, was jailed for 10 years and two months by the High Court, and ordered to be caned 14 strokes for the offences.
He had pleaded guilty to one count each of sexual assault, sexual exploitation of a minor, and breaching a personal protection order. Three other similar charges were taken into consideration.
The offences were committed between February and November last year.
He admitted that he made his daughter, then nine, perform oral sex on him twice, and on another occasion, perform a lewd act on him.
The court heard that the man and the children’s mother divorced in 2004, and it was agreed that their children would live with him.
In June 2004, the mother applied for a personal protection order against him, to restrain him from using family violence against her and their children.
The first incident of sexual abuse took place early last year, when he summoned his daughter to his bedroom and asked her to massage his body, legs and thighs. While she was doing this, he forced her to perform oral sex on him.
Later, he used the same excuse – asking her to massage him – to get her to commit an obscene act on him.
After this incident, he apologised to her and told her not to tell anyone.
The court also heard that late last year, the man became angry with his older son for giving money to his classmates and friends.
He beat the boy’s legs with the handle of a screwdriver in the bedroom, then took a knife from the kitchen and pointed it at the boy’s lips and abdomen.
The man had also kicked and stepped on his younger son and hit him with the handle of the screwdriver. On another occasion, he pulled the girl’s hair and shook her head.
Some time later, the girl told her older brother that she was afraid of their father. When pressed, she disclosed the sexual abuse. The boy then told his aunt, who confirmed it with the girl, then told the children’s mother.
They made a police report the next day, on Dec 30. The man was arrested a day later.
It is understood that the mother has since remarried and the children are now under the care of the aunt.
