Cut defence spending and ministerial salaries: SDP

You cut defence spending, Mindef big contractors like ST Engineering will collapse. ST Engineering has about 10,000 employees in Singapore and because of security reasons, most are Singapore citizens. Yes, 10,000 Singaporeans will become jobless.

I have bad news for you, the workforce of ST Engineering is actually 20,000. And actually, a fair portion of the work force is FT. many of the engineers for example are not sinkies. When it comes to security for military purposes, the SAF and Mindef has not been too particular. Onec they vet u, u are ok to rise to a high position in a sensitive department. For example, the former head of the RSN was a taiwanese. he was seconded to the RSN from the ROC navy, and later became a PR and in charge of the RSN. U can imagine how much secrets he knows, and whether he was still reporting back to ROC, who knows.

but to be honest, got a few friends in the above mentioned companies...these are really places with a lot of dead wood and poorly managed.

i know USA is also doing this, creating jobs by hiring more soldiers, creating more wars so they can spend on missles, airplanes etc.

but...isn't this reason for spending so much in defence ...very sad for us as a nation? (or citystate)

Yes, u are right. There is a lot of dead wood and mismanagement. the reason is they are govt. owned and run by political appointees or shake and bake instant generals. They know that they have a captive market, i.e. the SAF. So no matter how shitty their products are, or how much they charge, the SAF will still have no choice but to buy from them. That is why their products do not sell well in the world arms market.

Ministerial paycut is logical but defence cut is either a sick joke or a geno-suicide attempt.

Should increase defence budget and buy some serious stuff like aircraft carriers and nuclear missile submarines.

I think u better stick to police matters and gangster matters, the only sick joke is your lack of understanding of the defence budget and military situation.

The mutual suspicion and distrust have always been there and proven irreconciliable. Arms race or not, we have to have enough arms for deterrent and retaliation.

The mutual suspicion and distrust in many cases have been caused by Old goat and the PAP. They can easily tone it down and not be the assholes that they are. The most recent example is all the comments made in Old Goat's newest book. This is not the first time he has done it. Considering there were so many ex malaysian PMs, and sultans around, do any of them write books with inflammatory comments about singapore or specific sinkie politicians?

We have more than enough arms. In fact, we have so much arms that its no longer a deterrent, but a threat to the neighbouring countries. This makes the situation more unstable, because our neighbours are asking why we need all this stuff. Imagine if you and your neighbours have a lot of mutual interest and get along. Imagine if the neighbourhood turns bad and there are occasional thefts and breakins. Your neighbour keeps a baseball bat or a parang next to his door so he can defend his house. U also started out with a parang and a baseball bat. But later on, without telling your neighbour, u bought a .44 magnum, than an AK-47, than a 7.62mm machine gun, and a RPG-7 rocket launcher, all with tons of ammo. Now your neighbour is suspicious of you, right? This is the situation now.

Cut defence spending and ministerial salaries: SDP
By Tessa Wong

CUT defence spending and ministerial salaries, and spend more on education, healthcare and social benefits.

These are among the many proposals in the Singapore Democratic Party's (SDP) shadow budget, released on Wednesday as a counter-proposal to the Government's Budget due on Friday.

The project, which took about three months to conceive, was led and presented by one of the party's newest members Dr Vincent Wijeysingha.

One key suggestion is slashing the $11.46 billion defence budget by about 20 per cent yielding about $2 billion. The SDP reasons, in its budget paper, that enhancing relationships with neighbours would reduce the need for expenditure on military capabilities.

Ministerial salaries would also be slashed heavily to yield an estimated $30 million. The SDP suggests pegging the Prime Minister's salary to about $60,000 a month, with other ministers' salaries reduced proportionately.

It also suggests cutting out the positions of Minister Mentor, Senior Minister, and Ministers without Portfolio in the Prime Minister's Office.

Other suggestions include: a tiered GST system; a Singaporeans First hiring policy where employers must proritise hiring Singaporeans over foreigners; and a focus on building up small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and niche sectors such as green technology.

Better proposal here:

Cut the ministers pay to $5,000 a month. They can retire on a executive condo fully funded by gahment, and live on a subsiised living of $1,000 a week. After all, when you are old why need money, you need gracious living.

Decrease defence spending but increase attack spending. keeping spending on defending is hopeless, Singapore needs more land, air and sea spaces, time to act swifty.

Increase budget to buy more babies from overseas instead of getting PRs with 1 child which make it worse. In 10 years time you get 2 PRs retiring and only increase 1 tax payer.

Increase Ang moh PRs and reduce Chinese PRs intakes. One that creates jobs the other that look for jobs. Which one you prefer?

If follow your ideas no one want to be ministers. Ministers $5k/month then MPs even lower right? Ha ha ha..........
To be fair just peg to average top 5 country ministers?
