<!--close .storyLeft-->I AGREE with Mr Ang Chin Guan's letter ('Focus on safety first in building HDB flats'; Forum Online, Wednesday).
My family and I, owners of a new Design, Build and Sell Scheme (DBSS) flat in The Peak @ Toa Payoh, discovered designs that create safety concerns.
The bay windows in the bedroom, while pleasing to the eye, act as a step to the window grilles comprising a series of four horizontal bars that lead to a huge gap at the top. Active children who love to climb may regard it as a children's gym meant for exploration. Diagonal bars, or even floral design grilles would have been safer.
The three- and four-room units have master bedroom toilet doors through which pregnant women, or larger people, cannot squeeze.
A folding or sliding door would have been more practical.
The gates of the flats are oddly designed. The padlock holders are not on the inside of the gate facing the interior of the flat, but outside the unit. The design makes it hard to lock and unlock the gate. If a fire breaks out, the occupants will have a hard time escaping because the padlock is located outside and at a height above the shoulders.
Residents whose units are perpendicular to each other have discovered that they cannot open their gates at the same time or keep the gates open as this will impede the movement of people from the other unit. The gates should have opened not towards each other but in different directions.
Huge planters are provided but not everyone has a green thumb, and as the planters are like drains, they are a hazard for children.
The HDB, the developer Hoi Hup, and the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council should take a good hard look at how the units are designed.

hi there

1. hahaha!
2. another world-crass woe.

"The HDB, the developer Hoi Hup, and the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council should take a good hard look at how the units are designed.
Tan Xiu-Yin (Ms)" quote

psst!, Ms. Tan, you never check who is in charge of Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council http://www.btptc.org.sg/About Us/TheManagement.htm , where on earth they have time to check, one can stop the world fossil oil prices from sliding, one is too busy playing golf ( did she go?) and still wondering, where on earth is MAT? ( ha ha ha) and the rest too busy!

Did she vote rightly? then , repent!....one would think, in 2012, the design would have been better, imrpoved & affordable...but we still get the same old crappy HDB hangover designs & pay more...PAY MORE, you get Upsize, upgrade...

Reminds me of those epic fail pics

These flats built during whose watch? MBT?
During his time HDB already slowed down building new flats....with that little quantity still can churn out such mistakes.
This is what the 60.1% voted for....for millionaire ministars to sleep and laze on the job.

These are not design flaws. They are simply the FAP's appalling cheating ways even though you pay sky high for your "shoe boxes".

8 dollars heart ops man mentioned no shoebox apartments.

Wah now already build? So fast?

Or he was wacking the former National Development Ministar?

At least they don't make them with falling windows :D

They have actually calculated that in future years, SINgaporeans with less income, less children, will be eating lesser & can actually squeeze thrugh tiny toliet doors.:D

My neighbourhood 24 hour coffee shop, whose wife photos could be seen at the RC, "boom chat chat" with the 'whities', the claypot rice is raising their prices 50cts on July 1, 2012, $4.00 to $4.50 It was just an ordinary coffee shop, UPSIZE, UPGRADE, prices had increased many times in the past two years. The claypot rice from $3.00 to $3.50 to $4.00 now to $4.50, soon it will be $6.50

:p
