KLIA Customs Dept foils attempt to smuggle in drugs, cash worth over RM1mil
SEPANG: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s (KLIA) Customs Department foiled two attempts to smuggle in drugs worth RM1.09 million into the country earlier this month.
Customs director-general Datuk Seri T. Subromaniam said the department arrested two women and a man, all Indians, in two separate cases for attempting to smuggle in methamphetamine through KLIA.
In the first case, Subromainam said that on Jan 4, the enforcement team arrested two sisters aged 30 and 31, who were believed to be carrying 10.50kg of methamphetamine worth RM735,000.
"Checks on their luggage found the drugs hidden in a talcum powder container. The sisters arrived here from Chennai.
"The elder sister had entered Malaysia several times before, but it was the first visit for the younger sister," he said at a press conference on Friday.
In the second case, the department arrested a 32-year-old man on Jan 11 after checks on his luggage revealed drugs hidden in a compartment, weighing 5.20kg and worth RM364,000.
The man arrived at KLIA from Thiruchirapalli, India.
Subromaniam said that the three suspects have been remanded to facilitate an investigation.
