SINGAPORE: Kevin Kwan, author of Crazy Rich Asians, defaulted on his national service (NS) obligations, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said on Wednesday (Aug 22).
In response to queries by Channel NewsAsia following a report in the Straits Times, MINDEF said that the Singapore-born Kwan is wanted for defaulting on his NS obligations after failing to register for NS.

"Mr Kevin Kwan failed to register for national service (NS) in 1990, despite notices and letters sent to his overseas address. He also stayed overseas without a valid exit permit. Mr Kwan is therefore wanted for defaulting on his NS obligations," MINDEF said.
"In 1994, his application and subsequent appeal to renounce his Singapore citizenship without serving NS were rejected.
“Mr Kwan has committed offences under the Enlistment Act, and is liable to a fine of up to S$10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 3 years upon conviction.”

Kwan's 2013 best-selling book is the inspiration behind the film of the same name which had its Singapore opening on Tuesday night following its release in North America.
Fans swarmed the Capitol Theatre to catch a glimpse of stars like Henry Golding, Pierre Png, Tan Kheng Hua and Fiona Xie as they walked down the “jade-green” carpet.
Warner Bros' highly anticipated movie performed above expectations with an opening box-office taking of more than US$35 million (S$47.9 million) in the United States.
Channel NewsAsia reached out to Warner Bros, who had no comment on the matter. Kwan has an executive producer credit for the film.

According to his Wikipedia entry, Francis Seow was born in 1928. By the time NS was introduced in 1967, he was already nearly 40 years old!

some are autistic bordering on genius, thus exempted from ns in an saf role. can still serve the nation in a science lab like many a-star recipients do. this chap's service to sg on research in "soil disease" during the bulk of his ns duties (he did finish bmt and junior term of ocs before being awarded el presidente scholarship) far outweighs and outlasts the typical 2-year stints of ordinary ns men. this one super genius and must be unleashed for scientific endeavor at all cost and fairness. life and the universe grant immunity to those who can decipher, deconstruct, and defy the laws of nature.

I admire him more and more, skip NS and made a name for himself, proving that NS is an obstruction to males in their prime and time that could have been put to better use. Another fine example is ex-president Tony Tan's son, deferred for 12 years and now is an esteemed scientist. Both proved that SG males' careers are neutered when they have to enlist for two years during their prime.

Also, as the recent article written by a local female that she preferred whites than local boys as they are more eloquent also shows the pitfalls of NS. While guys of other countries in their prime age are jostling in the social arena and work circles, honing their interpersonal skills and building confidence; sinkie males are neutered, chastised and made to behave selfishly and act crudely in NS. (This happens when you throw a dozen males in a bunk, with only top-down, one-way, no-questions-asked communication being allowed, boys lose their communicative edge during this period and become the proverbial otaku with limited interaction with the outside world. Think of what prison does to a person and how it breaks them down and you will understand slightly how degenerative a person becomes two years in such a state of confinement and restricted freedom. Signed-on personnels aren't exactly the poster boy of suave males.)

So yeah, im proud of ppl like Kwan and Tan, siam, defer and use the time better elsewhere, you got living proof of how the other half did it and how well they turned out. P.S. Quah Zheng Wen and Joseph Schooling are yet to serve NS, both are on their way to sporting success and one is already a millionaire. Case in point, one m&d kia served NS and rejected Braga because "homesick"... lotta good NS did to that boy.. From hereon out, you have only yourself to blame if your kid's future or dreams are set aside due to whatever reasons or excuse you tell yourself, i know Kwan and Tan's dad didn't stand idly by and encourage their sons to serve "like the rest of us".

2. he (and his parents) did not register him for ns by 16.9 years.
3. because of 2, he (and his parents) did not seek deferment from ns until he's 21 and get approval from mindeaf.
4. because of 2 and 3, he (and his parents) did not apply for an exit permit.
5. because of 2, 3 and 4, he by age 21 applied for renouncement of his sinkie citizenship but was denied.
6. he's still a dual citizen but the u.s. citizenship will not protect him if he's in sg.
6.9 because of 2, 3 and 4, he'll be detained and get to enjoy soixante neuf in jail (or pay a hefty fine or both) if he arrives in sg.
