Discussion 0:13 While I do not advocate for females to serve NS, females making a mockery out of the NS system and in this case, the PES grading that males receive during NS, is distasteful and sets a low standard for trying to attract eyeballs and cheap laughter. Imagine that we flip things around and suggest assigning PES grades to women according to how suitable they are as a wife. I am sure many feminists would find this degrading and dehumanising.
Over the years, I have also seen many of such behaviour that crosses the line in my opinion. For instance, female wearing the OCS singlet, making videos mocking young officers who, understandably in their youths, behaving in an egoistic manner. And I myself have experienced young females who seem to feel entitled to judge someone else based on their NS experience, when they have not experienced NS, nor do they have a son who have served NS and they have the slightest idea of what NS is about. While it is not always necessary to go through something yourself to be a judge, just imagine that me as a male commenting that it is a walk in a park to go through pregnancy or that some should just "female up" when they are in pain during menstrual cramps. To me as a male, NS is a duty and I serve with pride., but it should not be materials for someone to attack me on, let alone make a mockery out of it.
Back to the topic, PES grading was meant to be just a way to classify males during NS to determine their suitability for different military activities, but over the years, it has also led to stereotypical views, discriminating treatment and misuse by some employers. For instance, some organisations (not necessarily government role) require male hires to be of a certain PES grade, while females applying to the same job do not have to, precisely because they don't have one in the first place. Then the question is: If females can enter the same role without a PES grade, then why must males hold a certain PES grade to qualify? Within social context, there are also degrading jokes at times on lower PES gradings, even as these people who hold a lower PES contributing more in some instance. Just imagine this - A PES A service personnel who frequently absents himself from duty while a PES E service personnel who always go above and beyond. I believe that these are things which are recognised by the government, which is why they have announced a review of the PES system recently.
I do not want to start a debate on NS, male and female equality or the lack of it, or any other matters. I just hope to spread awareness that such jokes is of bad taste and it should not be promoted. Males serving National Service is a service and a real sacrifice and I think the most basic respect we can give to those who served is not to make a joke out of it.
