SINGAPORE: A Singaporean couple accused of maid abuse was acquitted by the Subordinate Courts on Tuesday.

Property agent Lim Beng Tai had faced 12 counts of maid abuse while his wife, Ms Connie Ng Lay Har, faced one count.

Both are 39 years old.

Mr Lim had been accused of hurting Indonesian maid, Jasmiati, two years ago by swinging his fist at her and causing a fracture in her right eye.

He had also been accused of using his finger knuckle to hit the 25-year-old's neck or head and pinching her.

Mr Lim's wife had been accused of punching the maid once and hitting her right hand in a car last year.

District Judge Paul Quan acquitted Mr Lim of one charge as he had found insufficient evidence to convict him.

The prosecutor also withdrew Mr Lim's remaining 11 charges and Ms Ng's charge.

The judge said the maid's account of events was inconsistent with findings and evidence given by witnesses which did not support the maid's claims.

A relieved Mr Lim told reporters he was glad justice had been served.

He said he and his wife no longer hire maids to care for their three children.
