</td> </tr> </tbody></table> <!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--> A HOUSEWIFE was sentenced to 10 months' jail yesterday for scalding her Indonesian maid and sending her home without any medical attention. Brenda Tan Bee Khim, 40, a mother of three, was convicted of pouring hot water onto the back of Miss Tasiyem, now 26, at her flat in Tampines on May 15, 2006.
Four days after the incident, the court heard that Tan tried to hide her crime by sending the maid back to Indonesia.
During the trial before District Judge Loo Ngan Chor, Miss Tasiyem testified she was made to sleep with a pack of dogs on the balcony.
Seeking a significant period of imprisonment, Deputy Public Prosecutor Isaac Tan highlighted several aggravating factors in this case.
He said the maid suffered serious second-degree burns on her neck, back and left shoulder.
As a result of Tan's 'wanton act', Miss Tasiyem's body was blistered.
Tan, he said, was in a position of authority, and had deliberately used hot water to hurt the maid.
Once back in Indonesia, the DPP said, Miss Tasiyem was left to endure the rigours of travel, including having to spend a night at the bus terminal in Semarang before a long bus ride home.
'It is fortunate that the indignant family and friends of the maid in Indonesia have had the good sense to do all that was necessary to bring the accused to justice and to expose her foul deed,' he said.
Tan could have been jailed for up to 5-1/2 years for the offence.
She is appealing against her conviction. She is out on $16,000 bail, pending her appeal, and has to report once a month to the investigation officer.
