Crook of the Day: Pet shop guy abuse dog

STOMPer Rain was shocked to see this online video, apparently showing a dog at a pet shop in Simei that was so hungry so it was chewing off a sponge toy. What was even more shocking was that a pet shop employee later hit the dog to make it stop.

According to the information on the video posting, the shop is located near Simei MRT Station.

The patron, who was apparently the person who posted the video, said that the there was no food inside the glass tank the dog was kept in, and that it seemed that the dog was so hungry that it resorted to eating its toy.

When the patron informed a shop employee of the matter, the man, who was talking on his mobile phone, went on to hit the dog.

The patron wrote this online:

"When the tall guy slap/hit/whack the puppy's head (including the puppy's left ear area), I could hear a LOUD THUD!! A loud SLAM/SMACK OR 'PAP' SOUND!

"OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! The 1st milli-second I heard the SMACK sound and then immediately the 2nd milli-second I SAW THE PUPPY FLEW FROM LEFT ALL THE WAY TO RIGHT SIDE OF THE DISPLAY TANK!!! HUH???!!! WHEN THE PUPPY FLEW TO THE RIGHT SIDE, AGAIN HIS HEAD/BODY/NECK SLAM AGAINST THE FISH TANK WALL!!

"OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! THE TALL GUY HIT THE PUPPY THAT HARD!!!!??? THEN THE GUY SLAM THE CAGE DOORS AND WALKED AWAY!!!! WHILE HE WALKED AWAY HE WAS STILL TALKING OVER THE DAMN PHONE."

The patron said the dog was seen 'crying' after the beating.

That aside, the shop is guilty of not taking good care of their pets. I have seen their puppies eat their own shit and the staff oblivious to it.

DO NOT purchase puppies from pet shops. This will only encourage puppy mills. Unfortunately, their current "stock" will suffer, but it will lead to demise of these cruel puppy mills.

- Adopt from pet shelters, SPCA.

- Buy directly from the dog breeder. It'll cost more, but owing a pet shouldn't be a money thing.

First ask yourself for what reasons you want a dog. If the reasons are not strong enough, better not to have on. If one is not willing to groom, clean after, or exercise the doggie (a lot you ppl leave these to their maids) then it is better not to have one.

It is a fact that AVA has been very lax in monitoring the pet trade industry. There exists some pedigree puppy farms here where unwanted dogs are just thrown away and abandoned. There are many adverts asking for pedigrees free or cheap to be used as puppy factories without any regard for proper line breeding. My siblings each of whom owns 1 or 3 dogs has experienced dogs that suffers from some genetic disease inherited from such matings. One poor dog had a problem of weak hindquarters that when it was 5 years old, the back legs cannot hold the body up and it has no control over it's bowels. Another developed cancerous lumps all over it's bodies when it reached 6 years of age.

Having papers are no guarantee as in a few cases, pedigree puppies are actually half-breeds that one cannot tell when they were puppies. Usually when they became adults, there are evidence they were not true pedigrees. Mind you, even reputable pet shops could be fooled knowingly or otherwise.

Mistreatment of pets is very common here and it is very sad that our authorities appear to be helpless to stop it.

bro...most of the cats and dogs in those animals shelters such as SPCA have pycho problems ..cause many of their previous owner abuse them ..its not wise to adopt animals from there . the only reason SPCA wants you to adopt from them cause they need money to keep their shelter running .

get from breeder instead of pet shop ? most of the pet shops also buy from breeder . . most of the breeders in singapore for dogs / cats are the worst animals breeder on earth . they would not want you to go into their farm and look at the conditions of their breeding stocks , space ...ect ....you would be surprise to see 2 adults dogs put in a small 2 feets cages for breeding .

the best way to buy dogs and cats is to buy from reputable breeders not just any breeders .
1) check the puppies, kittens parents conditions
2) check their farm conditions


in my farm i welcome ppl to visit ( infact, im proud of my farm conditions , looks like a 5 stars hotel for cats and dogs ) . i only buy good reptuable breeding stocks around the world for breeding . one pair of adult chihuahua can cost me up to sin$14k . and i dont sell my puppies and kitten below sin$5k , why ? because i spend a lot of time , money , and effort taking care of them . i believe good things are not cheap , cheap things are not good . too bad most singaporean wants cheap stuffs ..and thats what they get .

buy on line from uk , aus , eroupe , japan . ...most of the reputable breeder have a photo for their parents and the living conditions of their animals ....forget about breeders in singapore ...unless you have visited their farm and they let you see the living conditions of those animals ..which i dont think they allow you to see

A good way I suggest is to attend dog show competition. There you will meet people who really cares for their dogs. Ask around from the people who are showing the type of pedigree you want. They should be able to offer one of their puppies or direct you to a good breeder.

Before making the choice, try and get the pick of the litter if you know how to choose or have someone who knows about dogs to choose. Not all puppies have same characteristics and some can be very troublesome if you made a wrong choice. For example, avoid getting one that is very quiet and unfriendly or one that runs away when you approach it. Learn how to assess the puppy's potential before spending a large sum. It is not the money insomuch as owning a bundle of joy or a bundle of misery in the future.

Avoiding the quiet one in the pack is the general rule of thumb if you are looking for a joyful companion. But 'quiet' dogs are not necessarily nature's abomination.

One serious dog owner friend I know told me he once had to choose a dog to look after a widowed relative. He watched the litter closely for a few minutes. In the end he chose the quiet and most observant one with the most steady temperament. The dog turned out to be the best fit for his elderly relative.

Double coated breeds like husky and tibetan mastiff cannot lah. Not long ago I saw a tibetan mastiff in a pet shop and was very tempted. but i decided no way because i don't want it to live in an aircon room only.
