SINGAPORE: A 45-year-old man has been arrested in relation to a fire that broke out in Choa Chu Kang on Saturday (Aug 1) evening, said the Singapore Police Force (SPF).

Both SPF and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were notified at about 7.40pm. SCDF said that upon arrival, it found the fire involved a unit on the 12th floor, but the smoke affected at least two units above it.

SCDF added that 40 persons in total were evacuated from the 12th to 14th floors of the block. The owner of the affected unit and two other tenants were said to have self-evacuated. The authorities said the fire was put out using a single water jet.

Ms Shirley Pang, who sent in video of the incident, said her family heard multiple explosions coming from the block on fire.

"We thought it was a fight," she said. The video showed at least two rooms on the 12th floor on fire.

She heard that others in the vicinity tried to go and help, but that they were unable to because of the severity of the blaze. Ms Pang also shared a photo of the aftermath, which showed the exterior wall of several apartment units covered in soot.

SPF said no injuries were reported, and that investigations are still on-going.
