BARRY DUGGAN – 06 FEBRUARY 2014
A cousin of former Liverpool star Steve Finnan has been jailed for drug dealing after he refused a suspended sentence from a judge.
Sean Finnan (27) at Byrne Avenue, Prospect, Limerick pleaded guilty to possession of almost 400 Alprazolam tablets for the purpose of sale or supply on April 25, last.
Judge Eugene O'Kelly was told in Limerick district court that the drugs, which had a street value of €680, were seized when gardai searched the defendant's car and his then home at Catherine Street.
Defence solicitor Darach McCarthy said his client - a father of two - has suffered with addiction problems in recent years and said his actions were to fund his drug habit and were “not for his personal enrichment”.
Sgt Donal Cronin told the court that Finnan has 55 previous convictions - 11 of which relate to drugs offences.
When asked what Finnan was doing to address his addiction problems, Mr McCarthy said his client was no longer engaging in drugs but that the “trigger factors were not being addressed”.
Judge O'Kelly indicated that he would impose a suspended sentence but Finnan shrugged his shoulders and declined the offer.
Finnan spoke briefly to his solicitor and Mr McCarthy told the judge: “He thanks you for your offer but wishes to decline.”
The judge imposed a nine month prison sentence.
While awaiting sentence, Finnan was shot outside his home in Limerick city on December 12 last. He sustained 20 pellet wounds from a shotgun blast.
Finnan sustained pellet wounds to his hand and upper body after two men shot at him while he was standing outside the home at around 9.30pm.
He was treated at University Hospital, Limerick following but was discharged a number of hours later.
One man has been charged and is before the courts in relation to the shooting.
