GEORGE TOWN: A couple has been sentenced to 24 years' jail each for starving their Cambodian maid to death last year.

Justice Datuk Zamani Abdul Rahim said that the prosecution had proven a case for culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the couple.

He had earlier amended their charge from murder to culpable homicide at the end of the prosecution's case.

Hardware store owner Soh Chew Tong, 44 and wife Chin Chui Ling, 44 were charged with causing the death of Mey Sichan, 24 at 2190, Taman Asas Murni, Jalan Bukit Minyak, in Bukit Mertajam between Jan 1 and April 1 last year.

Mey Sichan died after prolonged starvation.

Zamani ordered the jail term to start from the day the couple were arrested on April 1 last year.
