Higher levies for FTs, increase hiring of Singaporeans, push to up wages of Singaporeans, higher ARF and other tax for vehicles....etc etc. All these adds to higher cost of living for normal Singaporeans. Agree??

Singapore is a real live case study in the growing pains of an economy trying to shift further up the development scale.

This is the Highlights

The Singapore budget has underlined the irony of the situation where even the Asian country with the highest GDP per capita and built
on immigration has now found itself highly dependent on cheap imported labour and faces a backlash from its citizens about too many foreigners.

The NIMBY aspect of this irony was underlined by the surprisingly large anti-government protest two weeks ago against a plan to increase
immigration to maintain economic growth.

But the budget makes the economic policy concession that by relying on cheap mostly imported labour the government has allowed some industries to continue operating at low productivity rates, which doesn't necessarily serve the long-term national interest.

So it is now tightening the supply of foreign workers and even trying to push up wages in particularly low productivity sectors such as construction and some other services so business will pay more attention to higher productivity through training and innovation.

It has taken the shock of a severe public backlash against the five decade-old People's Action Party government to get to this point, so it
is hard to know whether it or the politics of self preservation or long term economics is in the driving seat.

For example, Capital Economics' Daniel Martin says: "Achieving a significant improvement in productivity growth will be difficult
since Singapore's performance in this area has already been reasonably good compared with other countries at similar levels of development"

And Singapore Institute of Management associate professor Randolph Tho says the country is walking a dangerous tightrope in
hoping that pushing up cheap labour costs will produce a productivity dividend.

In fact with the budget conceding the economy is operating close to capacity, higher inflation is likely to
be the short-term outcome of the productivity push, which will only make the anti-immigration crowd more grumpy with the government.

In other words, we have blind rats, leading the blind mice, who is leading the deaf, mute & blind rodents ( 60%)..

The biggest cost increase comes from land price inflation and increase in commercial rental expenses. Most of the inflation in Singapore originated from this source.

This is engineered by the ruling party.

First, it fills their coffers.

Second, Singaporeans will have less disposable income to start appreciating the finer things in life, like political freedom, politcal discussions etc..

Third, ...... long time ago LKY accused Singaporeans of being soft, complacent and spoilt ..... lacking the ancestral entrepreneural fire ...... so, this 'engineered-higher-cost-of-living' to induce hardship ......... is his version of giving a kick to our asses.

What the fuck must we care what that cheebye LKY say?
As if he say anything which is not a lie in the first place.

I wait for the time that he must die.
And may those who died at his hand and policies be as merciful to him as he is to those he hated.

controlling inflation is the job of the garmen.

if they are not doing their job, they should be fired.

what have the recently policies got to do what LKY?
his policies were good and effective.. without those policies,
we wont be where we are today..the old guns did their job well. ;)

the current miw groups sucks though. clueless bunch of people.

The policies also stemmed and stifled local growth and creativity in favour of gov't owned/sponsored enterprises. Many local SMEs had difficult time and faced uphill operational situations given the tighter freedoms to operate. The growth Singapore enjoyed was due to regional peace - thanks to Suharto and ASEAN. The current group was selected, groomed, and raised by the previous group. The Brits left Singapore in good shape. Singapore is fortunate not to be plaqued by natural calamities or inherited racial/religious chasms found in many ex-colonies. I would be more thankful for the collective efforts, understanding, and cooperation of her working class residents. This group is largely unrewarded.

Cheers!

Let's face it as long as the PAP is in power the costs in Spore are just going to go up. Only have to look at the track record of the PAP:rolleyes: We have the highest paid civil servants in the world with an entitlement attitude & do you really think they will ever cut back on any of their wasteful spending:confused:

It's not that Spore doesn't have enough $$$. Rather why would they want to share it with "lesser mortals". It's in the PAP's self interest to keep lesser mortals poor & dependant on the PAP. An independant citizen would start asking too many questions such as where is their CPF money.

As for the claim that LKY has been good for Spore. This is debatable. I think it was more that he stole the credit from the old guard. Anyway many of the problems that Spore faces today are the result of LKY's past & present policies .

Disagree...its consumption based tax..its time people know what and how to consume wisely.

The PAP might be the gov't but the country is run like a family business ;)

Don't have to look far to find the relatives & friends in the family business. Some of them are even notorious for their incompetence e.g. WKS, the ex CEO of SMRT,...

mate.. u just amplified my point..:D
