Cost of living must be lowered

In our visits to residents in the various constituencies, one issue that keeps cropping up is the high cost of living in Singapore and how people are finding it difficult to make ends meet.

According to the Ministry of Manpower, the median income for Singporeans in 2009 is $2,420 a month. Is this sufficient? We present below a breakdown of monthly expenses for an average household of four persons (two parents and two children):

Average monthly expenditure for a household of four

Housing instalment 500
Water, electricity and gas 200
Meals ($10/person/day) 1,200
Transport ($2.50/person working day) 200
Medical bills (ave per month) 50

Handphone and Internet 100
Household supplies 100
School fees and supplies 100
Total 2,450

Note that the estimates we have provided are rather conservative, that is, the expenses of many households maybe much higher. It is clear that the income of $2,420 is not enough for basic monthly expenses of $2,450 which, by the way, do not include expenditure for medical emergencies and recreation. And there is nothing for retirement.

In other words, you just go to work everyday and return home without doing anything else. Is this the kind of life that you want?

Many households have to resort to both parents working in order to be able to meet with the high cost of living. What about the children? Who is going to look after them? Employing maids is not the solution as maids cannot replace parental love and discipline. Besides, employing domestic help has its problems too.

The SDP's solutions

To overcome this problem and help Singaporeans meet daily expenses and lead a better life, we must push for the following SDP's alternative proposals:

1. Lower prices of our daily use of various items and services. this can be done by:

a. reducing the GST from 7% to 3% and abolishing the GST for essential items such as rice, oil, medicines, etc,
b. lowering your PUB bills,
c. making sure that our public hospitals reduce charges and stop making a profit from Singaporeans,
d. bringing down bus and MRT fares by at least 20%, and
e. ensuring that the government increases public expenditure for the poor.

2. Increase the wages of workers and employees through schemes like Minimum Wage. This will put more money into the pockets of Singaporeans. Higher incomes means greater spending power for Singaporeans. This will benefit businesses and help the economy to become stronger.

3. Implement the Singaporeans First Policy. We want to rely more on Singaporeans and less on cheap foreign labour. The high number of foreign workers presently in Singapore will only lower wages further because if there are more workers in the country, then employers can pick and choose the ones who will work longer and longer for less and less. We must stop the PAP from raising our population to 6.5 million because this island cannot cope with so many people.

So help us to help you keep the cost of living to an affordable level. Support the Singapore Democrats for a more secure and brighter future.

Calculation forgot to factor in CPF. And that's median income per person. If both parents working, that will double. The extra $2400 per month enough for them to hire a maid and bring whole family to eat wind every year liao. I think its a REALLY BAD way to write this article coz if both parents working which applies to most SG families, the picture actually looks pretty OK. They should use the lowest 10% of the population instead

I do agree with you Mr Char. But to me, living on two salaries is not a good idea..

Yes you got extra income and soon you'll get a maid, car and start to breed more.. But the

problem comes when either the husband or wife looses his or her job.. Than the sole

breadwinner gonna suffer bad making ends meet. Its happening right now all over SG.

Another fucking sinkie mentality

If Americans and Europeans can survive without maids, why can't Sinkies?

Cost of living cannot be lowered. First World country must have First World prices, whether you want it or not. Poor man in a rich country, of course life will be difficult.

Since wages are the prices to pay for setting up a business, than why are there poor in sinkeepoor..?

Ist world prices = 1st world salaries

So I guess sinkapore is not 1st world after all.

Have lived in Canada & didn't see people with maids, illegal or otherwise.
Many people can make do without a maid because they have a good child after care services & other child support infra structures.

For those mothers who choose to work they are able to do so because they have maternal leave, tax concession & credits for childcare, etc. If you have to call in sick, you don't need an MC like in Spore. Have even seen people bring their kids to work.

Over in Spore the gov't might give lip service to supporting people with children but it's only lip service.

Ya! there are cases of pregnant mothers getting dismissed.

Quote from MP Mr Wee's daughter

"If you're not good enough, life will kick you in your ass"

PM LHL has tried his best,by lifting ther S$ up 16% against USD within one and half month.

Wait till after he wins the erection, you see how he handles his stupid voters by lowering S$ 20% against USD!
Isnt that the trick his old man played against Sinkies for many years?

Spore men face problems because of their reservist liabilities up to the age of 40. While the women faces problems with every child they have. All citizens are expendable as they can readily be replaced by a foreigner.

This is the price Sporeans pay for the PAPs open door FT policy. We'll see if there's any hope for Sporeans after the next GE

Lets see if there is any more hope for the poor if PAP continues to dominate !

must vote wisely. if pap win again, they will increase their pay again cos gdp increase while all our pay are not increasing and keep on saying hdb and standard of living is affordable.

the up-spiraling living costs vs stagnant income is creating more headache when ends can't meet, despite both spouses working.

there's an interesting poll going on. maybe there's a chance that the poll results will be slightly more accurate indication of sinkie's sentiments...
