Corrupted town council allowed pasar malam to obstruct shophouses
23 Jan 2010

STOMPer Cyrus is annoyed that there are so many stalls set up in front of these Redhill shophouses, and says their presence is a nuisance.

In an email to STOMP today (Jan 23), the STOMPer says:

“In olden days Chinatown, roadside stalls are everywhere. You can just set up a stall yourself and do your business at there. That’s the olden day Chinatown.

“I was shocked to see the same view at Redhill Lane Block 84. It is a row of double storey shophouses.

“They actually extended the area of their own shop front till it actually reached the wet market on the opposite side. It stretched over the distance of 2 car lanes, blocking off the path totally, meaning if you need to go by that path, you must actually walk past their tables of goodies.

“Yesterday, my mum tripped. This was due to the way the stall people tied their personal tent cover. None of the shop owners actually bothered to come out to take a look or help her. Her arm suffered a minor dislocation.

“This morning, I went down personally and took these photo myself. From my understanding, those shophouse owners actually rented out the empty space in front of their own stall to outsiders to do their small business.

“As long as you pay the shop owner, you can just set up stalls in front of them. The empty space is actually controlled by the town council.

“These shop owners actually rented it out themselves without applying directly to the town council for usage of space.

“I questioned them and I found out that one of the shop owners is actually a PBM from the Community Club / Resident Committee.

“He was the one who started renting out the empty space in front of his own shop and soon the other shop owners followed. Some shop even rented the space out to 4 different people, with each person having like 2 to 4 tables to sell their own products. The rental is between $50 to $100 per day.

“It is no wonder that they dare to do it so boldly because they are following a important person from the Government committee.

“If anyone of you might be interested, you can make a trip down to Redhill Lane Block 84 in the morning between 8am till 10am. You will see the so called modern day Chinatown there.

“I wish to see some action taken by the town council.”
