A former Police Staff Sergeant has been sentenced to nine months’ jail for accepting a bribe from a man believed to be an operator of illegal gambling outlets.

Thirty-seven year old David Lim Kay Heng, was also fined $3,000.

He used to be a detective and an Investigating Officer with the Secret Societies Branch.

The court heard that Lim had accepted $2,000 from Chua Chin Hoe at a coffeeshop at Lorong 27A, Geylang in December 2005.

He asked Chua for the money after suffering losses betting on horses.

It’s believed Chua gave him the bribe as he was concerned that Lim was in a position to disrupt his alleged gambling operations.

Chua also hoped the ex-cop would help him, "as and when necessary" in the future.

Chua, who’s the sole proprietor of a company known as H & L Leisure, allegedly set up the firm as a front for his illegal gambling outlets which masqueraded as Internet cafes.

Investigations revealed that between 2006 and 2008, he operated no less than 18 Internet cafes all over Singapore.

Chua was introduced to Lim in late 2003 through another operator of illegal gambling outlets known as "Joe".

During the introduction, the court heard that the former police officer already knew about Chua’s activities.

Chua in turn knew that Lim was a police officer with the Secret Societies Branch.

Lim resigned from the Police Force on 13 February 2007.

For accepting the bribe, he could have been sentenced to five years’ jail, fined a maximum of $10,000 or both.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
