Can cut short the number of days they work after 65 and offer them contract position if they wanna work to stay productive. There are such options it’s just old birds stubborn and wanna hog the lime light
I know of several such old timers who stay on because they wish to remain active and believe that they haven't saved enough to retire.
 
I know of several highly qualified and capable ex-classmates who were let go in their early to mid-50s by private sector employers to cut costs.
They should take consolation that people in their 20s and 30s get retrenched in private sector while they stay until mid 50s

My cohort started working after graduating in the 1990s. PME jobs provided greater stability in those days than they do now.
