AN ELECTRICAL contractor was fined a total of $50,000 on Tuesday for failing to ensure the safety and health of employees and modifying a scene of accident. Ng Choon Seng, 55, owner of New Sun Electrical Contractor, admitted to the two offences earlier. On July 20 last year, on seeing that a worker, who had fallen to his death from the roof of a house, was not belted, Ng fastened a safety belt onto him. Ng had employed the Indian national, Mr Pichaimuthu Dhanikodi, 38, illegally to install a lightning conductor on the main roof of a three-storey house being built when he fell. The worker was holding a work permit to work as an electrician for another company at the time. Ng could have been fined up to $200,000 and/or jailed for up to two years under the Workplace Safety and Health Act. For modifying the accident, he could have been fined up to $10,000 and/or jailed for up to 12 months.
