Contraband cigarettes seized

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> THE Singapore Customs (SC) and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) have seized 29,120 packets of illegal cigarettes on June 23. The joint operation uncovered the contraband cigarettes which were hidden in a consignment of 56 units of sofa sets on a lorry from Malaysia.
The cigarettes seized have an estimated value of about $145,600, while the duty and GST involved amounted to $223,554. The 30-year-old Malaysian driver was arrested and charged on June 24. He was jailed for 2 1/2 years on Friday. The Malaysian-registered lorry used for the transport of the contraband cigarettes has been impounded.
