Qantas plane makes emergency landing in S'pore after losing engine (Updated)

No reports of injuries or explosion, says airline spokesman

SINGAPORE: Qantas says one of its planes safely made an emergency landing Thursday in Singapore, after one of the aircraft's engines shut down while flying over Indonesia.

A Qantas spokesman in Sydney, Australia, said the A380 aircraft experienced an engine issue soon after taking off from Singapore on a flight to Sydney.

The plane had 433 passengers and 26 crew on board.

Qantas spokeswoman Emma Kearns said one of four engines on the plane flying from Singapore to Sydney shut down.

She added that the plane can safely fly on three engines, but the pilot landed the plane in Singapore to be safe.

Kearns said there were no reports of injuries and the airline has not received any reports of an explosion on board. - AP

Qantas should investigate the reasons which cause the engine not functioning. Could this be a form of sabbotage?

Or it could be volcanic ash ingestion that caused it.

Few years ago a Qantas 747 Jumbo lost all engines
due to this, while flying over Indonesia.
There was a prior volcanic activity and residual ash in
the air was taken in by the engines and the internal
high temp glued up the blades with the sulfur ash.

Fortunately, after the aircraft descended to below
10,000 feet , the re-ignition attempts succeeded.

Now weather reports also indicate ash content in the atmosphere.

BTW - A 747 can glide without engine power for over 100 miles, if it
is flying from over a high altitude.

Brand new Trent engines. Rolls Royce is so screwed. From the hi res close up looks like a low pressure turbine or high pressure turbine failure, there is a hole in the turbine casing where the part failure happened. Most probably a blade failure but the damm engine is brand new.

Expect a mandatory inspection regime call from Rolls soon.

Brilliant suggestion. Usually people don't investigate such things. They leave it to nature.

I hope Qantas learns from you.

Brand new Trent engines. Rolls Royce is so screwed. From the hi res close up looks like a low pressure turbine or high pressure turbine failure, there is a hole in the turbine casing where the part failure happened. Most probably a blade failure but the damm engine is brand new.

Expect a mandatory inspection regime call from Rolls soon.

Maybe. But the ash could have been a contributing factor for the
pressure turbine blades to warp. Lets wait for the official report.

(UPDATE) SINGAPORE– A troubled Qantas Airbus A380 plane landed in Singapore on Thursday with smoke coming out of its underside and was quickly surrounded by six fire engines, an AFP reporter said.

Fire engines immediately swarmed the aircraft as soon is it landed on the tarmac on Changi Airport.

“I can see smoke coming out of it,” the reporter said.

Debris including what appears to be a piece of the tail of a Qantas jet was also found in the Indonesian town of Batam after a loud mid-air explosion, a witness added.

“I didn’t see a plane crash but I heard a loud explosion in the air. There were metal shards coming down from the sky into an industrial area in Batam,” witness Noor Kanwa told AFP.

Earlier reports said the plane has experienced engine trouble over Indonesian territory and attempted an emergency landing in Singapore once it had used up its fuel, an Indonesian official told AFP.

“According to the airport officials in Batam, who received radar information from Singapore, the aeroplane is trying to make an emergency landing in Singapore,” National Transportation Safety Committee head Tatang Kurniadi said.

With pictures of the broken engine and debris in Batam all over the news, this silly spokesman is still trying to deny there's an explosion. Cant they just verify before issuing any statement.

Qantas is grounding all A380 flights. It seems that engine problems on the A380 is not an isolated case. Seems that SIA also experienced some engine problems.

Makes one wonder what is SIA doing

If the plane had an engine shutdown, that is engine failure.

If the egine drop off, then you say the plane lost an engine.

Quantas planes used to be subcon to Malaysian Airlines(mistakenly reported by 1 news agency in Australia as SIA). They had several incidents like parts breaking off, plane suddenly falling a great height and also some parts being found joint together using staples. Was quite huge news in Aussie during that time.

Quantas planes used to be subcon to Malaysian Airlines(mistakenly reported by 1 news agency in Australia as SIA). They had several incidents like parts breaking off, plane suddenly falling a great height and also some parts being found joint together using staples. Was quite huge news in Aussie during that time.

Can understand the mix up since Malaysia like Spore is just another 3rd world country.

One has to wonder if it's any better in Spore when they are using cheap labour from Philippines, India, China,... :(
