Competition panel's view of petrol pricing

PUMP petrol is a relatively homogenous product sold by a few companies in Singapore ('Watchdog should monitor pump prices' by Mr Elgar Lee; March 23).

Hence, it is not uncommon for pump petrol prices to move up or down at about the same time, even in a competitive market. As long as the companies set their prices independently, the observation of parallel price movements does not provide sufficient evidence of anti-competitive behaviour.

The Competition Commission of Singapore is monitoring the movement of petrol pump prices and will take action if there is evidence that market players are colluding to fix prices.

I don't know the situation now, but when I was in Sydney some 25 years ago, petrol prices differ from station to station within a suburb, and can also differ between stations of the same brand. Not only that, the prices can change a couple of times within a day, depending on feedbacks from their field people who reports competitors' prices back to their marketing dept.

Now, that's what I call competition.

Now I now why everyone regards Singapore watchdog org a lame duck.

It is true that the competition commission Singapore is of no fault at all.

The reason for high pump prices is due to the high taxes going into the govt coffers. :o

Can't expect the CCS to admit that its the govt's fault right?

The collusion is so obvious and yet CCS in the dark. Maybe their investigators lack the basic skills in invesigation and/or directions from above to leave this collusion alone.

it's a freaking cartel.

all buddy buddy. if each sell lower, their own profit will hurt.

Very hard to find proof. Pump A up less than 24hr Pump B, C & D all up. Even if they set the price different by 1~2 cents will it make any different? Only 0.5~1% price different since a litre price is more than $2.
