It is supposed to be the largest trade union in Singapore representing the interests of Singapore workers, but it seems completely clueless on the grim reality they face on the ground.
The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is puzzled on why men leave the workforce once they reach their 50s, the Sunday Times reports today.
To add salt to the injury, it has the audacity to lay the blame for the decreased labor force participation rate for workers above the age of 50 solely on Singapore men “taking it slow”.
When asked on the possible reasons, NTUC deputy secretary-general and PAP MP Heng Chee How said:
“Some men may want to take it slow after taking out their CPF at 55. Some become self-employed and others for various reasons, including family duties, may also have left work.”

Though some Singaporeans may retire early, many of them may be forced out of the workforce by the easy availability of cheap foreign labor in the job market.
In this week alone, the Temasek Review has highlighted a few discriminatory job ads put up overseas to recruit foreigners for jobs which can be otherwise be taken up by Singaporeans.
For example, a dozen of Singapore companies put up job ads in Sabah recruiting Malaysians to fill positions such as airport cleaners, food court attendants and electricians which can be filled up by Singapore men above the age of 50.
One government agency – Contact Singapore, even flew all the way to Taiwan to recruit thousands of Taiwanese PMETs to work in Singapore.
How can NTUC expect Singapore men above the age of 50 to compete with these foreign workers? Even if they are still employable, their wages will be depressed by their presence.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal editorial, the relentless influx of foreign workers into Singapore has depressed the wages of ordinary Singaporeans, increased the cost of living and led to an overall decline in the standards of living.
Due to the PAP’’s liberal immigration and pro-foreigner policies, foreigners now make up 36 percent of Singapore’s population, up from 14 percent in 1990. Of the remaining 64 percent who are citizens, an increasing number are born overseas.
There are no independent trade unions in Singapore. NTUC is a pseudo-PAP organization which is always headed by a PAP minister. Its current Secretary-General is PAP Minister without Portfolio Lim Swee Say who once exhorted Singaporeans to remain “cheaper, faster and better” while letting in hordes of cheap foreign workers to compete with them at the same time.
