A taxi burst into flames on the CTE this morning, causing a massive jam on the expressway.
The ComfortDelGro cab caught fire near the Kampong Java exit.
According to ComfortDelGro spokeswoman Tammy Tan, the taxi driver was ferrying two passengers in the tunnel at about 10am when he noticed white smoke coming out from the rear of his vehicle.
“Knowing that this was highly unusual, he immediately pulled to the side of the road and, together with his two passengers, got out of the taxi,” Ms Tan said.
The quick-thinking cabby immediately called the police, who dispatched firemen to the scene. A civil defence officer arrived on a motorcycle but could not extinguish the flames himself.
Later, more firemen arrived and put out the fire in 15 minutes.
The Land Transport Authority closed the Kampong Java tunnel temporarily to conduct checks.
“We are thankful that our driver and his passengers escaped unhurt,” Ms Tan said. “We are in contact with them and are ready to help where needed.”
She added that the company is investigating the cause of the incident to together with the vehicle’s manufacturer to prevent another similar incident.
