BEIJING: Mask-wearing Beijing residents endured a third day of pollution at hazardous levels on Sunday, as authorities warned that a thick cloud of smog may not lift from the Chinese capital until midweek.

As the dense smog shrouded large swathes of northern China, flights were cancelled and traffic delayed as visibility was reduced to 100 metres in some areas.

The dangerously poor air quality was highlighted by a steady stream of news broadcasts on state television, many of which warned residents against venturing outside.

The pollution also provoked China's huge number of microbloggers to take to the internet, with some high-profile web-users calling for a re-evaluation of China's rampant modernisation.

Rapid economic growth has led to a dramatic increase in the consumption of coal and car-clogged city streets.

"The foreign media is laughing at us. I agree with their laughter," said Hu Xijin, the editor of the state-run Global Times newspaper on Weibo, China's version of Twitter.

"This is a warning to the Government and Beijing's citizens. We have to think about what kind of modernisation we want and how to manage it."

Hu said the pollution issue would be on the front page of his newspaper on Monday.

Beijing's municipal environment warning centre issued its second alert in two days, warning people to avoid outdoor physical activity.

The centre also urged government officials to set an example to other residents, by not using their cars.

Air quality in Beijing showed small airborne particles with a diameter small enough to deeply penetrate the lungs at a reading as high as 993 micrograms per cubic metre on Saturday evening, the warning centre said.

The World Health Organization says the figure for such particles, known as PM2.5, should ideally be no more than 25 micrograms per cubic metre.

High levels have been linked to health problems including respiratory disease, heart disease and lung cancer.

A reading shown on the United States embassy website in Beijing was above 800 micrograms per cubic metre at the height of the pollution Saturday. But it was at 375 at 5pm on Sunday (0900 GMT).

Official PM2.5 figures have only been monitored in China's major cities since the beginning of last year.

The lack of official data makes it difficult to compare the recent smog with previous cases of pollution, said Ma Jun, director of the Beijing-based Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs.

"But it is interesting to see that residents have been warned about the dangers of pollution by official media," Ma told AFP.

"This has never happened before, and is a result of the transparency that we now have with the figures."

The pollution is expected to engulf Beijing until Wednesday before wind arrives to blow it away, according to a weather report from the meteorological station, Xinhua news agency said.

Ten flights had been cancelled and five delayed by more than an hour at Beijing Airport by 11am (0300 GMT) Sunday, the airport said. However, flights were departing on schedule by the afternoon.

China's air quality is among the worst in the world, international organisations say, citing massive coal consumption and car-choked city streets in the world's biggest auto market.

Unfortuantely pollution is the price to pay for progress/industrialisation. And you need industrialisation to climb the next rung to a developed society. All the large developed economies went through this step.

Over in India, their pollution is that of poverty. No public latrines, people poop on the street. And the recent gang rapes of women only highlights the problems women face.

Without public toilets, women are forced to hold it in till there is area of privacy (there is none) and when they have to go it is a total embarrasement and lack of privacy.

So we see China with pollution from rampant progress and India with pollution coming from poverty. I think it is better in China's case because with economic progress Beijing has the $$$ to improve quality of life. Chinese spent the last 10 years building roads and modern trains (India's roads and trains are still 1950s standards - I was about a year back - shocking). I read that the next 10 years will be devoted to increased pollution standards, clean drinking water, better medical safety nets. Sure there will be stumbles but based on my frequent trips to China and i saw how they built up their infrastructure, Beijing will likely make great steps in the next 10 years.

Unfortunately, China pollution already has serious impact on its population especially increasing number of deformed baby, children with mental problem when more of them are being born with autism/down syndrome etc . Those numbers are staggering at 1 out of 10 kids.

China's soaring birth defects linked to pollution
China's horrific pollution has been firmly linked to a staggering increase in birth defects according to a major scientific survey.
The number of Chinese children with birth defects rose by 40 per cent between 2001 and 2006, according to the National Population and Family Planning Commission.
Around four to six per cent of all children born in China each year have physical defects, including congenital heart disease, cleft palates and water on the brain. Of those, around 30 per cent die and 40 per cent are disabled.

Birth defects are on the rise in China according to the National Center for Birth Defects Monitoring of China. Their latest statistics show that nearly 1.2 million newborns have birth defects and congenital disability. It comes to one disabled infant being born every 30 seconds in China.

One articles from China Daily/Asia News Network also reported increasing number of mental illness among young people in China due to rapid industrialization.

One in ten Chinese minors suffers from mental disorder
Thu, Jun 10, 2010

BEIJING - Nearly one in ten young Chinese under the age of 17 have some sort of mental disorders, a recent survey suggests.

"Change in environment change, growing pressure and sharper competition all play a part in the problem," Cui said.

Another news article on chinese boys have become more girlish in recent year..What this article is telling us has some truth as more and more Chinese boys/teenager shown on China/Taiwan TV are becoming more sissy in look and behavior. I believe the pollution and the blatant use of PCB/Plastic products in China have a major contribution to this phenomenon
