AGREE with Dr Vincent Tan Yan Fu that Singapore is a sports weakling, but winning Olympic medals is not an instant process ("Singapore is a sports weakling because of lack of will, not size"; last Saturday).
It has been a 20-year process for Singapore, since the first foreign-born table tennis player of distinction, Jing Junhong, started playing for the country in the 1980s.
Singapore also did not win any individual medals during her successor Li Jiawei's time, and this has taught us that it takes three generations to win an Olympic medal.
Feng Tianwei represents the third generation of foreign-born players, and the winning of a medal is due to the passing of experience, from Jing to Li to Feng.
I agree with Dr Tan that Singapore has displayed a lack of will in wanting to win medals. This explains the dearth of individual medals for 52 years.
We must remember that as a multiracial melting pot of Asia, we should always welcome immigrants, who will eventually embrace the Singapore identity.
