3 stabbed at London tube station in terror attack, police say

What to do in the event of a terror attack

(CNN)A man stabbed three people at an east London tube station Saturday before police subdued him with a stun gun and made an arrest, London's Metropolitan Police said.

Police said they were treating the stabbing at Leytonstone station as a terrorist incident.

One man sustained serious injuries not considered to be life-threatening, police said. Two others suffered minor injuries.

The incident happened just after 7 p.m., police said. The suspect was taken to a London police station.

Commander Richard Walton, who leads the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, said: "We are treating this as a terrorist incident."

"I would urge the public to remain calm, but alert and vigilant. The threat from terrorism remains at severe, which means that a terrorist attack is highly likely."

A senior European counterterrorism official told CNN this week that intelligence obtained by European security agencies indicates ISIS is aiming to attack the United Kingdom following the terrorist attack in Paris last month.
Police officers investigate the tube station late Saturday, December 5.

Videos posted to YouTube and on Twitter purport to show the aftermath of Saturday's London stabbing. A large pool of blood is on the ground near the exit gates.

Several show police confronting a man inside the station, near the exit, and yelling, "Drop it! Right now!"

They fire a stun gun at the man, who is wearing a gray top, tan pants and a black hat with ear flaps. But the man continues pacing in front of the officers and even lunges at them.

In one video, a woman can be heard saying, "I just want to get out of here." The scene is loud, with voices echoing throughout the station and police repeatedly shouting at people to get back.

There is more shouting before another pop is heard, apparently from the stun gun, and the man falls to the ground. Someone watching shouts, "Yes! Stupid idiot!"

Two police officers roll the man onto his stomach and handcuff him.

A man in the crowd shouts, "You ain't no Muslim, bruv! You're no Muslim, bruv! You ain't no Muslim!"

SAN BERNARDINO: President Barack Obama insisted Saturday that America "will not be terrorized" as the Islamic State group praised the perpetrators of the California mass shooting as "soldiers" of its caliphate.

The president's pledge and extremists' praise followed an announcement by the FBI that it was treating the investigation into the San Bernardino rampage as an act of terrorism.

"It is entirely possible that these two attackers were radicalized to commit this act of terror," Obama said of Syed Farook, 28, and his 29-year-old Pakistani wife Tashfeen Malik, who slaughtered 14 people and wounded 21 others at a year-end office party on Wednesday.

In its English-language radio broadcast Saturday, IS stopped short of explicitly claiming the attack but referred to the assailants as soldiers of the Khilafah (caliphate) who were "killed in the path of Allah."

In the group's Arabic-language radio broadcast earlier in the day, however, they referred to the attackers simply as "supporters of the Islamic State."

Obama said in his weekly address that the Islamic State and other terrorist groups "are actively encouraging people -- around the world and in our country -- to commit terrible acts of violence, often times as lone wolf actors."

"We are Americans," he added. "We will uphold our values -- a free and open society. We are strong. And we are resilient. And we will not be terrorized."

The carnage marked the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since the Newtown school massacre in 2012, when 26 people, mostly children, were shot dead.

The New York Times Saturday published an editorial on its front page for the first time since 1920, using the rare, prominent placement to urge gun control and lash out at politicians following the attacks.

"It is a moral outrage and a national disgrace that civilians can legally purchase weapons designed specifically to kill people with brutal speed and efficiency," it said.

Hours after the attack, US-born Farook and Malik were killed in a firefight with police, leaving investigators to comb through their belongings to try to determine a motive.

"We have uncovered evidence that has led us to learn of extensive planning," David Bowdich, the assistant FBI director in charge of the Los Angeles office, told reporters.

"There's a number of pieces of evidence that has essentially pushed us off the cliff to say we are now investigating this as an act of terrorism," he said, adding that the couple had attempted to destroy their digital fingerprints.

Bowdich said investigators were examining a Facebook posting in which Malik is believed to have pledged allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, made around the time of the attack.

The massacre, if proven to be terror-related, would be the deadliest such assault on American soil since the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Relatives were unable to explain how the couple, who had an infant daughter and seemed to be living a normal life, could have committed mass murder.

"I can never imagine my brother or my sister-in-law doing something like this. Especially because they were happily married, they had a beautiful six-month-old daughter," Farook's sister Saira Khan told CBS News.

"It's just mind-boggling why they would do something like this."

The family's attorneys said while the couple were devout Muslims, there was no hint they had become radicalized.

Attorney Mohammad Abuershaid said few people came in contact with Malik, who wore the full-face veil and was soft-spoken and shy.

"The women (in the family) communicated with her. Farook didn't want anyone else to talk to her," he said, adding that the men in the family had never even seen Malik's face.

Abuershaid said Farook had met Malik in 2013 through an online marriage site and had traveled to marry her in Saudi Arabia, where she lived, last year.

One of Farook's colleagues said he was convinced Malik had radicalized her husband.

In Pakistan, Khalid Janbaz, former dean of the pharmacy department at Bahauddin Zakariya University, described Malik as a "brilliant student."

Former classmate Abdia Rani told AFP that she had "gradually turned religious," and over time became more serious and withdrawn.

"But we never thought that she had extremist links or even can be an extremist," Rani said.

A US defense official, meanwhile, confirmed that Farook's brother was a decorated Navy veteran who won medals for his service during America's "war on terror."

Abuershaid and fellow attorney David Chesley said Farook had apparently been teased by colleagues at the county health department, where he worked as an inspector, over the beard he grew.

One witness at the ill-fated party said Farook had suddenly left and returned a short while later, heavily-armed, dressed in black military-style gear and a mask -- and accompanied by his wife.

A home-made explosive that failed to detonate was later found at the scene.

The landlord of the couple's rented townhouse opened their home up to reporters and the public who flooded in Friday, taking pictures and videos in a surreal scene.

Toys, a crib, a prayer rug and documents were scattered through the home where investigators found thousands of rounds of ammunition, as well as a makeshift bomb-making laboratory and 12 pipe bombs.

Authorities identified the victims as six women and eight men aged 26 to 60. All but two were county employees and colleagues of Farook.

Terrified children ran for safety with their parents as a victim was left on the floor of the ticket hall lying in a large pool of blood. The distressing scenes were filmed on mobile phones and posted online by onlookers.

Witnesses said that until police arrived, the knifeman, 29, attacked people at random for up to ten minutes screaming: ‘This is what happens when you f*** with mother Syria. All of your blood will be spilled.’ But one onlooker defiantly shouted back to him: 'You ain't no Muslim bruv.'

Another called out: 'Drop it, you fool.'

One victim, 56, was left with serious injuries and rushed to hospital with a police escort while two other people suffered minor wounds. None was life-threatening.

After reportedly slashing his victim's throat, the man allegedly threatened several other passengers before being confronted by a number of unarmed police officers.

The officers ordered the man to drop his weapon, who continued to wave the large knife.

One video shows the man lunge towards the police, with witnesses shouting 'he's stabbed someone'.

One of the officers reportedly shouted 'Taser, Taser, Taser' before discharging the weapon.

It is understood the man needed several bolts of electricity before he collapsed to the ground.

The incident has now been handed over to the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command.

The victim suffered serious, non life-threatening knife wounds while two others were injured.

Head of Scotland Yard's Counter Terrorism unit, Commander Richard Walton said; 'We are treating this as a terrorist incident. I would urge the public to remain calm, but alert and vigilant.

'The threat from terrorism remains at severe, which means that a terrorist attack is highly likely.

'I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity of Leytonstone underground station earlier this evening at around 7pm who saw anything suspicious to call the anti-terror hotline on 0800 789 321.

'Anyone who may have captured video or photographic footage of the incident is also urged to make contact with the Counter Terrorism Command via the Anti Terror hotline.'

A Number 10 spokesperson said: 'There is an ongoing police investigation into tonight's attack in London. We are monitoring the situation closely as further details emerge.'

The stabbing was the first Jihadi attack in London since the murder of soldier Lee Rigby in May 2013.

Bystanders shouted at the man to drop his knife as he was standing in front of the police officers, pictured

Eyewitness Laurynas Godvisa said: ‘I was going to Leytonstone station dressed to go to Christmas dinner with people from work. As I walked down I just saw a lot of people running but I ignored it and kept walking to get my train, but suddenly I couldn’t believe my eyes – I saw I guy with a knife and a guy on the floor.
EAST LONDON REACTS TO ATTACK

A defiant East Londoner has been filmed condemning the knifeman who carried out a knife attack 'for Syria' at Leytonstone underground station, dismissing the killer as not being a true Muslim.

'You ain't no Muslim bruv,' the witness can repeatedly be heard saying as he watched the attacker being pinned to the ground by police.

The powerful statement has been widely quoted on social media with many people saying the man's actions represented only the work of a killer rather than someone showing their support for Syria.

'You ain't no Muslim, bruv'. I will stand by THAT Muslim anytime,' wrote one social media user.

Another supporter said:'#YouaintnoMuslin, London cannot be broken. Sums up our unity perfectly.'

‘I was so scared I ran for my life. After a good ten to 15 minutes police came and got the guy and arrested him. And as he was coming out, he said, “This is what happens when you f*** with mother Syria. All of your blood will be spilled”.’

Astonishingly, bystanders filmed clips on mobile phones and immediately uploaded them to Twitter to show the aftermath of the rampage and the knifeman’s tense stand-off with police.

One short film showed a man dressed in dark clothing lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Families with children dashed across the ticket hall within yards of the machete-wielding man, as concerned bystanders shouted at them to get away.

Incredibly, others including an elderly man holding a carrier bag walked past the attacker to continue their journey, seemingly oblivious to the danger and the pool of blood where one victim was slashed.

Moments later a group of policemen in anti-stab vests rushed to the scene and challenged the knifeman to put down his machete.

But the attacker – dressed in a grey sweatshirt and beige trousers – held up the weapon, appearing to injure an officer, who pushed him off as he was warned: ‘Drop it you fool.’

At that moment passers-by pushed through the barriers, appearing to ready themselves to grab the man.

Another officer prepared to fire a high-voltage Taser gun at the knifeman, who ducked to try to avoid being hit. Over the shouts of the crowd, an officer was heard warning: ‘I’m going to Taser you right now.’ One man filming the incident urged: ‘Taser him, Taser him.

Following the attack, Transport for London ceased all services between Liverpool Street and Woodford / Newbury Park while the scene was examined.

There were conflicting reports over where the man had been injured. Some witnesses claimed the victim had been slashed in the throat, while one video showed a man with an apparent arm injury.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: 'We were called at 7:09pm to reports of an assault at Leytonstone underground station.

'We sent a number of resources to the including our joint response unit, an incident response officer, an ambulance crew and London's Air Ambulance to the scene.

'We treated a man for stab wounds.

'He was taken as a priority to hospital escorted by the doctor from London's Air Ambulance.'

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: 'The stabbing in Leytonstone is absolutely shocking. My thoughts are with the victim and his family.'

A Twitter user has been telling of the bloodshed and horror that unfolded at the station.

The commuter was on their way to a Christmas dinner with his workmates when he saw people running frantically.

They wrote: 'I ignored it and kept walking to get my train, but suddenly what I saw I couldn't believe my eyes.

'What I saw was I guy with a knife and a dead guy on the floor. I was so scared I ran for my life.

'After a good 10-15 police came and got the guy and arrested him.'

Michael Garcia told ITV News: 'I look over and i see a guy huddled on the floor behind the barriers and the guy brandishing the knife.

'It was a small blade maybe about three inches long. And then he's screaming "go on then, run, run" and there's people like wanting to go forward to try and help the guy, but the guy's standing just right next to him, just brandishing the knife.'

An eyewitness called Khayam told BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘The majority of people were running away from the station. I walked closer to the tunnel to listen in – there were a lot of people screaming. Within about five to ten minutes they brought out the person who was trying to stab people. They put him in a police van.

Passengers tried to avoid the escalating confrontation which lasted for more than ten minutes

‘When he came out I didn’t hear him say anything but I saw pedestrians shouting at him. They weren’t happy with what he had done. One pedestrian threw a bottle at him.

‘I saw a victim come out on a stretcher and then police closed off the station.’

Another man called Farhan, 31, said that his uncle, who works for London Underground, said that the attacker picked on a white passenger inside the station and tried to cut his throat while screaming: ‘This is for Syria.’

Farhan added that when the attacker cut the man’s neck, a station manager shouted: ‘You are not even Muslim, why are you doing this?’

The air ambulance attended the scene. Two officers from British Transport Police were guarding the entrance to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel last night.

Stationed outside the entrance, one officer confirmed that a victim from the Leytonstone attacks was being treated there, but could not comment on their condition, nor whether family members had arrived. ‘What we have is only a snapshot of what happened, but officers from British Transport Police and the Met are here. I can’t say any more.’

The stabbing comes at time of great tension in Europe following the Paris terror attacks last month.

The coordinated attack on the French capital, in which 130 were killed, as well as the launch of British airstrikes on ISIS locations in Syria, sparked fears that terror groups could launch lone wolf attacks on Europe.

All they need to do is kick out all Muslims and peace will return.

Any Muslims want to live in non-Muslim countries must renounce Islam. If not, they have to go live in Islamic countries and they have so many to choose from. I don't understand why Muslims want to live in non-Islamic countries and then demand non-Islamic countries to respect Islam.
