Call me a purist, but when we were young, we were thought to pronounce the word "the" as "dee" only before vowels. For example, "dee outsider" or "dee umbrella". Nearly all the CNA newsreaders and even our radio announcers are fond of pronouncing "dee" before every other word - "dee" people instead of "der" people. Loke Wei Sue is the worse. I switch off the telly every time she appears. They need to get back to basics; no wonder our overall standard of spoken English has fallen.

Melissa Goh, when live on the scene, has the habit of starting sentences with "now". Go figure.

hi there

1. bro, if you have not enough of such crap!
2. try tuning on the local radio stations.
3. at least 2 mouthers speaking at the same time over some useless or crappy things.
4. what a din!

On the radio I tune in to the BBC at 88.90. On TV I watch BBC,CNN & CNBC.

I try to avoid "tainted" news from gov't sources because it can be economically dangerous.

Yup! Too much useless chatter. Which is why I hardly listen to the radio.

Timothy Go is the worst, can't string one sentence together, always pausing at the wrong point and scrambling to recover and reconstruct the sentence. In the past, David Nye was worst of the worst. Strange accent and annoying breaking and dragging of ending words in a sentence. Good riddance that he's gone.

Here's a tip.
For radio you must listen at night when there's less advertising & unecesary chatter :)

And better music too. I'm also a BBC listener. In the early 70s, I used to tune into shortwave to get the AFVN (American Forces Vietnam Network) channel and hear all the latest hits before they get to our shores.

I used to listen to the British Forces radio that was on FM on a Grundig radio, much clearer than the SW frequencies. I remember listening to Sarah Ward on Sundays

Ah yes, Sarah Ward. And there was Brian Matthews and John Peel.

The British newscasters and music presenters were always spot on in their diction and very pleasant to listen to.

i was recommanded to listen to BBC by my sec 2 english teacher to improve my englandness. Sadly, my england pronounication is not up to standard. But i remain an avid bbc worldservice radio end user, now 22 years since, BBC spore broadcast in 88.9FM is weak compare to govt approved local radio stations. Many places in spore still cannot receive clear broadcast, especially bad at changi airport.

There used to be a BBC relay station with the tall masts at Kranji near the reservoir. Not sure if it is still there today.

what is wrong.. 90% of Singaporeans.. speak bad English.. even basic grammar.. gone wrong

Spore radio back then had alot of BBC talk shows, & some soaps too. The locally produced programs were limited to "dedication" programs :D Even our TV was dominated by shows produced by the BBC.

Although we've progressed to many more stations, some would argue that Spore english hasn't improved, but regressed :)

No one seems to care about the standard of english in Spore.
$$$ is more important.

Maybe that's why the standard of english has gone down:confused:

Regressed is probably more apt. Yes, those days they Brain of Britain, The Goon Show, Round the Horne and stuff like that.
