Look at the timeline for 2016:
1.Continuous barking on South China Sea issue and telling Chinese government to respect the ruling from International Court of Justine.
2. Chinese government has warned Singapore through official and unofficial channels. One just need to watch China news to see the threats heaped on Singapore.
3. Taiwan elected DPP's Tsai Ing-Wen early 2016. Took power in mid 2016 and started to implement cultural indepedence as well as not agreeing to the 1992 concensous.
4. China rachet up its encirclement on Tsai through reducing tourist flows as well as stalling further trade discussions.
5. LHL acted as the lead promoter of TPP in the media and international conferences. China through the propaganda channels already decided it is part of a strategy to contain China.
6. LHL continue to make various vulgar jokes on China and Chinese in international politics.
7. LHL bet on the wrong person to win US Presidency. China feels that they might have a upper hand (TPP is dead and Trump might pull back from Asia).
8. Mindef continues to ship Terrex vehicles on commercial ships through Xiamen and Hong Kong (despite all signs pointing to increasing
9. Vehicles got detained in Hong Kong on LEGAL BASIS (without proper papers). Hong Kong government was tipped off by China (who detected vehicles in

10. China Ministry of Foreign Affairs openly tell Singapore to end its exercises in Taiwan as the main condition.
11. Various PAP ministers continue to bark the following:
a. We adhere to 1 China Policy.
b. We will continue to have exchanges with various "sovereign countries" we deem fit. - Might be implying that Singapore will hack care the PRC "feelings" to continue military exercises in Taiwan?
Point b will conflict with Point A when it comes to the super sensitive PRC over Taiwan's independence issue.
My guess is:
1. PAP ministers too clueless or relaxed about the PRC threats?
2. Escalate the tensions (PRC threats and actions) to get more attention from the new US government? US media might start supporting Singapore's stance and start shifting President Trump's attention back to this island?
