Clenbuterol detected in a Shenzhen restaurant

CRI, August 6, 2013

The Shenzhen Municipal Food Safety authority has revealed that the beef in a steak restaurant in the city was detected to contain clenbuterol.

Southern News reports that a severe penalty of nearly 1.22 million yuan (nearly $199,000) has been imposed on the restaurant.

A total of 441 kilograms of frozen beef without health quarantining by the Animal Health Supervision Institute was seized in a raid of a shopping center in the Futian District of Shenzhen. Law enforcement officers took samples from the 10 batches of frozen beef, one of which was detected to contain clenbuterol.

The beef containing clenbuterol was sold at a restaurant named "Original Super Steak". The restaurant bought 110 kilograms of frozen beef without health quarantine, amounting to a total value of 203,300 yuan, from the Lejia stores nearby. A severe punishment of 1.2 million yuan was imposed accordingly, which is the heaviest fine in the history of Shenzhen's catering industry.

In a further inspection of the beef supplier Lejia store, thousands of pounds of "imported beef" without proof of "entry inspection and quarantine certificate" was seized.
