‘Romance’ packages: Inside Shenzhen’s ‘private cinemas’ offering girlfriend experiences

A growing number of “private cinemas” in Shenzhen offer tiered “dating experience” packages that include varying levels of interaction between customers and female companions, according to an undercover investigation by Sing Tao Probe.
The venues, often marketed as “romance experience centers,” require advance booking through messaging platforms such as WeChat. Packages are typically divided into categories such as “first love,” “sweet phase” and “passionate phase,” with prices increasing alongside the level of interaction.
At one venue in Futian district visited by undercover reporters, rooms were arranged like karaoke lounges, with private compartments. A manager said the venue mainly targets customers from Hong Kong seeking a dating-like experience.
Basic packages, priced from 399 yuan per hour, include watching films and conversation. Higher-priced options, ranging from 599 yuan to 899 yuan, involve closer physical interaction described as “flirtatious” activities.
An additional package priced at 1,199 yuan includes a dice-based game in which participants carry out assigned actions. Some of the activities involved intimate physical contact.
A manager said the operation was legal, adding, “If it were illegal, we wouldn’t dare to do it.” However, under mainland Chinese law, paid services involving intimate or sexual acts are prohibited.
Reporters later visited two other venues and found similar pricing and arrangements, with young women accompanying customers to watch films and interact.
At another venue, a manager told reporters that higher-priced packages could include “special services.”
One worker, who gave the name Mengmeng and said she was 18, said she previously worked at a beverage shop and joined after seeing an online recruitment advertisement. She said she could earn more than 10,000 yuan per month.
She was also observed encouraging customers to upgrade to higher-tier packages offering upgraded services.
A Hong Kong customer who had visited such venues said they operated under the guise of entertainment while providing illicit services.
