Cleaner jailed for keeping extra $54,000 in salary

A former cleaner who kept an extra $53,955 in salary was jailed for five months on Tuesday.

Ng Leong Chuan, 30, had resigned from his job and went to the company's office in Toa Payoh Central on Sept 6 to collect his final salary.

He was supposed to receive a cheque for $755 but was told by the co-owner of the coffeeshop operator, Song Huat Catering & Supplies, that he would only receive $545 after appropriate deductions.

Instead of keying in $545, the clerk mistakenly keyed in $54,500 when she issued a new cheque and handed it to Ng.

Is this an offence ?

The cleaner keep the amount that the cheque issue to him, officially, in black and white.

The one who should be answerable is the clerk.

Why is the cleaner being jailed ?

The clerk don't double check the figures?
Should have been fired on the spot.

The cleaner did not do anything wrong
